About Nick

I am a retired math teacher with thirty-one years of experience with the New York City Department of Education. I hold a New York City Junior High School Mathematics Teacher License, a New York State Permanent Certification as a Mathematics Grades 7-12 Teacher & a New York State Permanent Certification as an Administrator/Supervisor. When I taught at Passages Academy, I was perceived by my colleagues to be a Math Word Problem Specialist. I, with the help of my colleague, was able to reach and challenge students with special needs in the area of Mathematics A topics. I received positive feedback from supervisors who observed me teaching mean and median and algebra word problems to students with special needs. They were able to absorb and regurgitate the material. I care very deeply for my students and am anxious to see them succeed. The principal of the school told me that I teach from the heart. In 1999, I received a public service award from the City of New York. I got a glowing observation report from my supervisor who witnessed me teach the application of signed numbers to basic math students. I was invited to submit the lesson to the Auxiliary Services for High School Curriculum Handbook. I also taught GED Math two nights a week at Benjamin Cardozo High School for the 2004-2005 school year where a 95% passing rate was achieved. I also had the rewarding experience of teaching math and science to English as a Second Language students. I feel that I bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the table and I feel I have a lot to offer. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I can teach mainly applying algebra word problems, signed numbers, evaluating algebraic expressions, using algebra to solve geometry problems, solving equations using the inverse operations to get the variable alone on one side of the equation, solving equations with variables on both sides of the equation, solving equations with two variables, area, perimeter, volume, multi step area problems, Pythagorean theorem, angle relationships, triangles, transformations, mean, median, scientific notation and slopes and intercepts.

Anatomy

When I majored in health education in Nassau Community College, I excelled in anatomy and physiology. When I taught ESL/ESOL, I covered anatomy and physiology utilizing a skeleton . I also have quizzes covering the human body and its functions.

Elementary Math

I can teach mainly applying determining the number of outcomes using the tree diagrams, combinations, permutations and Venn diagrams; applying fractions to find the probability of dependent events and applying adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers; applying mean, median, graphs, percent, decimal, scientific notation and area problems; applying algebra word problems, signed numbers, evaluating algebraic expressions, using algebra to solve geometry problems, solving equations using the inverse operations to get the variable alone on one side of the equation, solving equations with variables on both sides of the equation, solving equations with two variables and area , perimeter, volume, multi step area problems, Pythagorean theorem, angle relationships, triangles, transformations and slopes and intercepts.

ESL/ESOL

I have 2 years of professional experience teaching science to ESL / ESOL students who are studying for their high school equivalency diplomas. I also designed a Web page where my students wrote essays discussing the environmental issues in their native countries. I also taught math to ESL / ESOL students.

Geometry

I can teach these concepts: applying area, perimeter, volume , multi step area problems, Pythagorean theorem, angle relationships, triangles, transformations , slopes and intercepts and some trigonometry.

Prealgebra
