About James

I'm a recent SUNY New Paltz graduate with a B.S. in Mathematics. During my studies at Dutchess Community College I tutored other students, and I've helped many students from other universities and high schools since.

Subjects I've studied include College Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus I-III, Trigonometry, Geometry, Linear Algebra, Mathematical Analysis (intro and intermediate), Discrete Mathematics (at DCC this was the equivalent to Intro to Proofs), Foundations of Algebra (a prerequisite for Abstract Algebra), Abstract Algebra (aka Modern Algebra), and Probability and Statistics.

In order to be successful in the courses that follow basic algebra and calculus, you must have a solid understanding of the basics. Math has a tendency to build on itself and I try tailor each session for the specific needs of each student. Usually students will send me their work at least a day before their lesson. I find that when I complete the work beforehand the lessons are smoother. I've helped numerous failing students get their grades back up and end up passing the course.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
