I have worked with students with language delays to improve their receptive and expressive vocabulary in the following content areas: (math, science, social studies, English language arts). I also have experience with teaching vocabulary with learners using augmentative communication modes.
I am dual certified in Elementary Education (N-6) and Special Education (N-12). I have a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction.
I have 20+ years experience with teaching phonetic awareness and phonics skills and other reading strategies to help children better decode unknown words and become better readers and writers. I especially like helping children learn to read, spell and write by using the Zoo-Phonics curriculum along with integrated Language Arts activities. I love to teach using this multi-modality method (kinesthetic, visual and auditory) to meet the individual needs of the average student, English Language Learner, and learners with special needs!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a permanent NYS teaching certificate for Elementary Education (Pre-kindergarten - Grade 6) and Special Education (Pre-Kindergarten - Grade 12).
I am currently a full time instructor in a 12:1 combined Kindergarten/Grade 1 classroom. I have been teaching this particular level with students with hearing loss and/or special needs for 5 years. I have prior experience as a Resource Room teacher position in a public school district.
I have prior experience using Handwriting Without Tears curriculum and materials. I have worked closely with occupational therapists in my classroom to team teach handwriting with students. I address proper pencil grasp, correct posture and appropriate seating, hand strengthening warm-ups, and fine motor activities. Students receive directionality instruction, letter formation instruction, spacing techniques and fun strategies to avoid letter reversals and transpositions as well as writing letters the correct size for the line.
I have been teaching phonetic awareness and phonics skills as part of reading instruction and expressive writing in regular and special education classroom settings for over 20 years. I typically use a multi-modality approach to phonics , using the Zoo-Phonics curriculum and integrated Language Arts activities. When children engage all their senses in learning, they retain 70-100% of what the see, hear, say and kinesthetically do! I help students use their phonics skills to become better spellers and make writing enjoyable.
