About Patricia

Hello! Thank you for taking time to view my tutoring profile. I am a stay-at-home wife and mother of two with more than 10 years of tutoring and instructional experience. During my training, I obtained initial NYS teaching certification in two areas: secondary math instruction and instruction for working with students with disabilities. Although these certifications expired as of August 2014, I have continued to keep my training in these areas current by remaining up-to-date on the latest NYS standards and education techniques and providing tutoring services to students of many different ages and backgrounds. In addition to my certification training, I have a BA and MSEd degree in math education. My educational training has provided me with many opportunities to work as a teacher in middle school and high school classroom environments. Now, I work as a math tutor for students who experience difficulty understanding math as it applies to math classes and related fields (i.e.- understanding how to apply algebra skills in a career in landscaping).

My professional experiences have prepared me to instruct a wide variety of individuals. While working as a New York State certified substitute math teacher and as an academic coach at Encompass Resources in Rochester, NY, I often worked with students who found math to be challenging, including students with learning disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, autism, and other disabilities that can impair learning. As I was earning my degrees, I worked as a math tutor for other college students who were having difficulty understanding the math required for them to be successful in one or more of their college classes. During this time, I also served as the instructor of a math review class for adult learners preparing to take their New York State pesticide licensing exam. My most recent tutoring experiences have come through the operation of my own private tutoring company, PS Tutoring.

From my experiences working with students of all ages, I have come to believe that anyone is able to learn and use math. Even students who struggle with math can achieve success in it through guided practice, persistence, and frequent evaluation of progress. My objective as a tutor is to provide students with the extra academic support and guidance that they need to achieve their math goals and the skills they need to apply that math in their chosen field.

I genuinely enjoy teaching math, and I look forward to the opportunity to share my passion for math with you or your child. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have or to set up a face-to-face meeting to talk about your questions in person.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am NYS certified for teaching Students With Disabilities - Grades 7-12. I have also completed coursework on working with people with ADD, ADHD, autism, and other disabilities in an instructional setting. Part of my undergraduate degree is in special education.

Algebra 1

My experience with Algebra 1 curriculum includes working as an in-class tutor in an Algebra 1 classroom, co-teaching an Algebra 1 class for 1 year during my undergraduate training, and working with many students in an official and unofficial capacity to help them prepare for their Algebra 1 Regents Exams.

Algebra 2

I have taught Algebra 2 & Trigonometry for 2 years and have tutored many students in this subject. As such, I am very familiar with all of the content that is taught throughout this class. I am also very familiar with the common topics that are tested on the Algebra 2 & Trigonometry NYS Regents Exam. In addition to my own experiences with Algebra 2 & Trigonometry, I have access to many Algebra 2 & Trigonometry resources (including a copy of the textbook) that will help me guide your student to improving his/her grade in the class and succeeding on the Regents Exam at the end of the year.

Calculus

As a math major, I studied calculus and higher level mathematics up to the graduate studies level. I am very familiar with the curriculum, and I also have my old textbooks to use as reference tools.

Differential Equations

As part of my undergraduate work in the math program at Nazareth College, I completed a course in Differential Equations. I passed the class with a high A. I also passed the differential equations portion of my comprehensive exam as part of earning my BA in mathematics.

Elementary Math

I have more than 10 years of experience tutoring math, and while my training focuses on high school mathematics, I enjoy working with children of all ages. I also have experience tutoring elementary mathematics, starting in Grade 5. When working with elementary students, I like to not only help them with the math that they are learning in their current school year, but also to provide them with a solid foundation in math that will help them to be successful in the math that they will be learning in middle and high school.

Geometry

During my time earning my bachelor's and master's degrees, I provided primary instruction in Geometry in several different classrooms. Over the past 5 years, I have specifically worked with many students in Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2 & Trigonometry as well, and I am very familiar with the coursework at all three levels and the content most likely to be tested on the NYS Regents Exams. Geometry is also my favorite math - because of this, I have collected many resources that I have created and that were created by other professionals to help students learn the intricacies of geometric shapes and equations, geometric proofs, and other content covered in Geometry.

Linear Algebra

As part of my undergraduate work in the math program at Nazareth College, I completed a course in Linear Algebra. I passed the class with an A. I also passed the linear algebra portion of my comprehensive exam as part of earning my BA in mathematics.

Logic

I have taken several courses that require the use of philosophical and mathematical logic as part of my undergraduate course requirements. Among these classes were an introductory logic course (philosophy) and a proof-writing math class. I did very well (high As) in both classes, and have experience tutoring other college students in philosophical logic as well as understanding mathematical logical processes.

Precalculus

As a math major in college, calculus was one of my favorite topics of study. Calculus is more-or-less a study on why functions behave the way they do, and I was fascinated by the math behind the graphs of the equations. I have also had the opportunity to develop study materials and activities for the precalculus curriculum during my studies for New York State teacher certifications.

Regents

I have taught in all three high school math courses that have a NYS regents exam: Algebra 1 (Integrated Algebra), Geometry, and Algebra 2 & Trigonometry. I also have spent the past 10 years tutoring in these and other subjects, spending my time focusing on test prep, study skills, and homework help. I am very experienced and comfortable with teaching the content of the NYS Math Regents Exams.

SAT Math

Over the past 2 years, I have helped several students prepare for the math portions of the SAT and ACT. I am very familiar with the content and layout of these exams, and I have several resources at my disposal to help students prepare for these exams.

Statistics

I am experienced with Statistics at the college and graduate college levels. During my time studying as a math major, my Statistics professor referred many students to me for Statistics tutoring. I scored in the 90s in all of my Statistics classes, and I was able to help all of my students score well in their Statistics classes too.

Study Skills

I have more than 10 years providing supplemental math instruction to students in elementary, middle, high school, and college. My tutoring has largely focused on homework help, test prep, and studying - including preparing for NYS regents exams. I also worked as an academic coach for a year - which means that my job was to teach students how to prepare for exams and learn how to study.

Trigonometry

I have taught Algebra 2 & Trigonometry for 2 years and have tutored many students in this subject. As such, I am very familiar with all of the content that is taught throughout this class. I am also very familiar with the common topics that are tested on the Algebra 2 & Trigonometry NYS Regents Exam. In addition to my own experiences with Algebra 2 & Trigonometry, I have access to many Algebra 2 & Trigonometry resources (including a copy of the textbook) that will help me guide your student to improving his/her grade in the class and succeeding on the Regents Exam at the end of the year.

Positive experience.

I am grateful to have found Patricia to work with my daughter on her math. My daughter left the session feeling more confident and with a better understanding of areas that had been difficult for her. We will definitely use her again in the future when we need a tutor!
