About Pamela

Hi to all! Academically, I earned a BA in English from Brooklyn College. I graduated Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.7. I also participated in an Urban Teaching Program, accumulating 12 credits toward my MA in Education.

Professionally, my experience covers a broad range from Elementary Education through Middle School, High School and College. I have instructed all ages, developing solid curriculum and implementing dynamic lesson plans. I have taught Language Arts and Creative Writing in Catholic school - 7th and 8th grade. I was also a Substitute Teacher for the DOE.

My tutoring experience includes ESL at Brooklyn College, SAT Reading and SAT Writing with Huntington Learning Center and 10+ years of private sessions. My specialty areas include: ELA, SAT Writing, Regents, ACT Test Prep, Literature, Creative Writing, Essays, Term Paper Writing, Public Speaking, College Applications and Confidence Building.

Personally, I possess a strong background in Musical Theatre. I perform as a part time Singer/Vocalist in various venues. I am a Leukemia Survivor, now almost five years post Stem Cell Transplant. Living with a renewed and profound sense of gratitude and purpose, I would be eager to share my passion with an approach that is dedicated and motivating, yet always kind and non-judgmental.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve academic success!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

As an Elementary (K-6) Teacher, I plan units that incorporate all aspects of learning. For example, Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening all thrive together as a UNIT. As a tutor, I encourage students to talk about the assignment, exchange ideas and create an outline so that all skills build off of one another. I use Prewriting techniques such as Brainstorming, Semantic Maps and Graphic Organizers to help generate and organize ideas. "Think-Write" aloud and "Shared Writing" is a great way to help children navigate their own work and model how to write effectively. Exercises to increase confidence also play a big role in learning how to construct various texts. My areas of K-6 expertise include: Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Essay Writing and Test Preparation for the state ELA exams. In addition, I have a very caring, patient attitude and will adapt, providing various approaches for every type of K-6 learner. I am working toward my MA in Education.

English

I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Brooklyn College where I graduated with Honors (GPA 3.7). I possess strong knowledge of English theory, methodology and terminology. I can read and analyze a broad range of texts. developing and sustaining critical arguments. I value clear communication, interpretive skills and creative thinking. It is my belief that reading and writing shape the world. When tutoring English, I seek to challenge the mind and engage the imagination. I teach life-long skills, while students discover themselves and build a solid foundation for success.

Public Speaking

Academically, I have a BA in English which was the foundation for my excellent verbal communication skills. As an English Teacher, I incorporated Public Speaking into my curriculum. I have also taught Drama and encouraged my students to perform monologues in front of the class. In addition, I have worked as a Sales Associate and a Public Relations Liaison where I personally gave persuasive speeches. I also have years of Musical Theatre experience, therefore I have a great command of the stage arena and a strong performance presence.

SAT Writing

I have experience tutoring specifically for SAT Writing at Huntington Learning Center. At Huntington, I helped middle school and high school students improve their writing skills. Homework help was an important part of my job as well. Most often, I prepared high school students for their SAT exams through writing exercises and sample, timed tests. My SAT subject area focus was and continues to be Critical Reading/Writing and Vocabulary.

Writing

In addition to a BA in English from Brooklyn College, I have taught Language Arts and Creative Writing in a classroom setting, I have developed and implemented many dynamic lesson plans to help students improve their writing. Poetry workshops are a big part of my teaching. I have been a private Tutor for over 10 years, assisting students of all ages with exam writing, essay writing and term papers. I also work with college level and graduate students as a facilitator, tutor and mentor.
