About Stephanie

I consider myself a lifelong learner and people would say I have a passion for helping others. In terms of educational background, I have a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Sociology in addition to two Masters of Science degrees. I earned my first master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs and my second master’s degree in Organizational Learning and Human Resource Development. During my undergraduate experience I was a teaching assistant within my major and was accepted into Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Honor Society of Sociology. During my graduate experience (the second time around) I had the second highest GPA in my cohort and won an award for the most well written thesis project. Most recently I have completed coursework towards a graduate certificate in Non Profit Management and am taking classes to become a certified health and wellness coach.

What is interesting about my educational path is that as a high school student my academic performance was 'average' (and sometimes below average), good grades did not come naturally to me. I believe my struggles early in my educational journey helped me to develop organizational and study skills which are still with me today. I was also the first person in my family to attend college and I have done research and my master’s thesis on the experience of first generation college students and indicators for success. This unique perspective of being a 'first gen' along with my extensive experience working in higher education gives me the ability to relate to a diverse population of students. I've also served on a college campus Early Alert Support Team which identifies and supports at risk students. I have been able to foster student development in the classroom through providing relevant resources, teaching self-reliance, critical thinking and holding students accountable. I also consider myself an early adopter with new technologies and like to find unique ways to incorporate technology (apps, videos, social media) into the learning experience.

I have 13+ years of recruiting, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of professional staff and college aged student staff. Through my experience as a student affairs administrator at the college level, I have assisted students with resume writing, job searching and interview preparation. I have also assisted students in improving their public speaking skills through training sessions on verbal and non-verbal communication, and role play activities to increase self-confidence. I have experience editing and proofreading undergraduate and graduate level papers and coursework.

While working in student affairs at the college level, I have secondary responsibilities as an academic advisor and freshman seminar instructor for first year college students. A large part of my role with these students includes providing individualized support related to transitional education issues, goal setting, academic planning, career exploration and career planning. I have been doing this type of work for 9+ years.

In addition to the skills outlined above, I am also able to assist students with the college application and selection process. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
