About Renee

An experienced teacher of 20 years, I've had the pleasure of working with students of all ages and watching them implement the skills I've helped them develop. I've worked in private and public schools, suburban and urban settings, and I currently work at Monroe Community College as a Tutor in the Center for Academic Reading (CAR), a writing laboratory, where students receive academic support to enable them to achieve their goals.

I specialize in general high school and college level English, and I have experience tutoring elementary and middle school aged students, too. In addition to helping with grammar, homework completion, reading comprehension, and essay writing, I also help students prepare for standardized tests like SATs and ACTs and assist with college applications.

I'm happy to travel to work with students in their own home environment; however, arrangements can also be made to meet at my residence or even in a public venue.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

A professional artist for several years, I give private lessons to students of all ages. I enjoy working with all kinds of materials, but my strengths are in drawing, painting and multimedia - and I enjoy teaching people to see a composition in terms of its emotional value. Comfortable in acrylic and watercolor, I'm well versed in the importance of creating a composition. Able to help students see light and dark.

English

Over 20 years teaching experience, kindergarten to college, with an emphasis on composition and essay writing.

Grammar

I currently teach at MCC's Center For Academic Writing, where I help students with special needs. Many of these students really struggle with their verbal and written expression, and I know I've been able to help them!

Painting

I am a professional artist, specializing in the medium of acrylic paint and abstract expression. My work can be seen on request. My paintings are currently for sale online at at several local art galleries. I have experience teaching art to middle school age students, and I taught painting and beading at Camp Getaway, a retreat for women, for 7 consecutive summers.

Regents

I have taught 11th grade Regents English, so I am comfortable with the format teachers are looking for. I also understand the rubrik which teachers use to determine competence during the grading process. I can help students with thesis generation, organization, summary skills, and quotation to help them best represent their ideas in writing.

Study Skills

I currently work at Monroe Community College as a Tutor in the Center For Academic Reading. A large part of what I do there is help students to refine their study skills. I specifically help them with time management, active reading skills, goal setting, color coding of materials and more.

Writing

I've been an English teacher for over 20 years, and I currently work in the Center for Academic Reading at Monroe Community College, where I assist special needs students with their essay writing as they work toward completing their programs of study.
