About Jolene

I am a New York State Certified teacher in English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), Elementary Education, and Special Education for students in grades 1-6. I am also two classes away from a certification in Social Studies. I have been teaching for 12 years in the New York State public schools system, as well as abroad in Poland. I am currently offering my services as a freelance tutor. Additionally, I teach future teachers at the college level! I have experience across all grade levels Kindergarten to Adults. I specialize in teaching English to students with low levels of English proficiency including refugees. I am open to online and in-person tutoring.

When I am not teaching, you can probably find me traveling. I have a B1 Level in the Polish language.

I am dedicated to helping my students succeed. I can help you attain higher levels of achievement and proficiency. I make learning fun and interesting, and I have had great results with students in the classroom setting. How much more can I provide you in a one-on-one setting! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified in Elementary Education in the State of New York. My certification is for grades 1-6. I have taught in the New York State public school system for 10 years. Grades taught include: K-6 ESOL, 4th grade, 6th grade special education, 2nd-4th grade self-contained special education.

ESL/ESOL

As a certified ESL/ESOL teacher, I work with students of all ages to improve their English proficiency. I have experience teaching ESL in New York State Public schools (grades K-12) and at the college/university level. I have strengths in the areas of teaching refugees and beginning learners, as well as teaching higher level writing skills for advanced students. I have been trained as an elementary school teacher, and this experience aids me in designing lessons plans that are engaging and meet individual student needs.

Handwriting

I am familiar with and can teach students either the zaner-bloser or D'Nelian styles of cursive handwriting. While cursive handwriting is not taught in schools much any more, this remained a part of my undergraduate literacy and writing courses. For students just beginning their schooling, I encourage use of cursive, and teach it in conjunction with learning letters of the alphabet through a program called The Logic of English.

Reading

As a specialist in ESL/ESOL, I have skills and strategies for teaching literacy and reading skills. Much of my experience has been with primary grades in which teaching reading is a core part of student learning. I have experience with phonics, phonological and phonemic awareness, guided reading, and teaching strategies for comprehension.

Social Studies

History and geography are one of my passions in teaching - so much so that I pursued New York State certification in Social Studies. Before becoming a teacher I majored in International Studies and Political Science. This field required many courses in history, geography, and political science. I passed the certification exam in New York on my first attempt with a very high score!

TOEFL

In addition to preparing students for New York State exams in high school, I have worked with a number of adult students in preparing them for the TOEFL exam. I have my students take a practice test, and then we target areas of the test that are the most difficult. I help students understand how the test is formatted, as well as with English skills.
