About Rick

As an undergraduate I received honors in Physical Chemistry at University. I then received a Master's degree in Quantum Chemistry from an Ivy League University where I also spent time as a teaching assistant in general chemistry and tutoring students as well. I then attended medical school and eventually ran a private practice. I retired in 2010 and have done some occasional tutoring since then.

Most people are able to understand chemistry given the information that is at an appropriate level for the student. The key to successful tutoring is being able to understand what the student knows and how to integrate that with the complex subject matter. Students must pass the tests and quizzes that are given in class. For the student the ability to logically understand the parts of the question and to apply the principals of the subject is the basis for getting to the correct answer. That is what guides my approach to tutoring.

My hours are flexible and I can be available throughout the week. However I do not have specific days off from my part time job. My flexible schedule does enable me to set tutoring times that are suitable for most people.

I have a strong background in teaching general chemistry and I am still doing some part-time research in the application of biologic chemistry and quantum mechanics to the study of the human nervous system. The basic principals of general chemistry have not changed over the recent years. My understanding of the scientific principals of quantum mechanics, general and organic chemistry remain as strong as ever.

I am easy going and find it very rewarding when a student grasps a good understanding of the material.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have had a life long interest in physical sciences and earned a Masters in Chemistry from Cornell University in 1969. During those and subsequent years I had extensive experience as a teaching assistant and tutor in general chemistry. More recently I have had successful tutoring experience since the basic concepts of chemistry have not changed over the years.
