About Oliver

Hi, my name is Oliver! I just graduated from the University of Rochester with a major in English and a minor in Mathematics. I was a Peer Adviser for other English students at my school. I also have a long personal history in standardized test prep, which I used extensively as a high school student, and I taught during my time in college. I have helped many individual high school students prepare for college admissions by assisting them with their SAT, ACT, Subject Tests, and applications essays. While learning material and mastering the basics is important, I believe in motivating students to learn themselves and in teaching them skills that will help them not just in academics, but in life. I emphasize empathy and emotional maturity as a necessary foundation of both academic and personal success.

I also have a lot of experience with writing, if that is a subject of particular interest. I like writing a lot, so I write a lot. My writing has won multiple academic awards. I've had the honor and pleasure of having my plays' performed in person and my stories' published in my school's undergraduate publications. My focus within my major was in Creative Writing.

I am an adult with ADHD, which was not diagnosed until my senior year of college! Therefore I can sympathize with those with ADHD or other learning disabilities, and would be eager to help those individuals.

In high school, I scored a 740 on the Critical Reading and Mathematics sections, and a perfect 800 on the now defunct Writing sections of the SAT. For the ACT, I scored a 35, with perfect 36's on the Mathematics and Reading sections.

I am a patient and thoughtful tutor, who will emphasize emotional well-being and self-love as an aspect of academic preparation just as much as intellectual preparation. Please feel free to contact me if you feel that I may be of use to you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Knowledgeable about how to approach ACT testing

Oliver clearly understood what we are trying to accomplish and how a student with ADHD has to approach the test. We look forward to working with him. We will be meeting next week to develop a more comprehensive plan.
