I'm very excited to be in this unique position to share my skills and help students reach their full potential. I have been working with children and at risk students for the past nine years, as a Tutor, Special Education teacher, and Educational Consultant. Through hard work and effort, my students have been able to show above average progress. I firmly believe in structured struggle as a teaching method, and will not expect students to simply memorize facts. Instead, my teaching revolves around the "why" of material. Instead of learning the Gettysburg Address, for example, I ask students "Why did Lincoln need to make this speech and what did it do for the country?" History is my area of expertise, however I have spent the past six year with students of special needs, specifically designing methods to teach struggling learners basic English and writing skills.
As a result of my teaching and organizational strategies, I have been rated as highly qualified and a master teacher by my administrators in both the District of Columbia Public Schools and Charter Schools, over the past five years. My capability in the classroom has allowed 90% of my students to show average or above average growth; all this in a city where only 44% of students are proficient in reading, and 46% are proficient in math. These numbers show, not only superior performance in education, but also in the areas problem solving, communication, and researching.
I would be more than happy to bring my skills to your door and work with you personally.
I know that together, we will be able to accomplish great things and I'm looking forward to starting with you!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a teacher for the past six years, conducting daily lessons and speaking publicly for six hours each day. I have also taught units in English classes which specifically deal with speaking in front of a large audience. My students are able to use notes, group-peer practice, and teacher practice in order to prepare for a public speaking assignment. I was also chosen as my Company's Public Affairs Officer during my time in the Army, giving me an opportunity to speak before many high ranking officers.
My undergraduate degree from SUNY Fredonia was in Sociology. I studied the classical theorists of Marx, Weber, and Durkheim. I also studied and wrote extensively on the modern theorists and into the post-modern school of thought.
I am currently certified as a Special Education teacher in both New York State and Washington DC. I have taught Special Education classes for the past six years, both inside the General Education Classroom as well as in a small group setting. I have developed over 100 Individualized Education Plans, and my areas of expertise is in students with Learning Disabilities and Emotional Disturbances.
As an educator, I have taught small classes devoted to improving a student's study skills. I have developed lessons revolving around note taking, short hand, and review strategies. My main strength in this area is my ability to take a student's current organizational and studying strategies and guide them to develop something that works best for them.
