Nazareth College (English Literature)
University of Rochester - Warner School of Education (Graduate Coursework)
Hello, my name is Becky and I am currently a Master's student at the University of Rochester. In the next year I will be working on getting certified to teach both English to speakers of other languages and Spanish. I absolutely adore children and find great pleasure in helping, not only children but students of all ages, reach their highest potential as they experience the everyday triumphs and challenges that life has to offer. My one true love is learning; I feel that no one should ever stop learning therefore, I find it very rewarding to inspire others in this endeavor. There is no greater feeling than watching an individual experience the "light bulb" moment of understanding and the smile that subsequently radiates from within as they come to the realization of "I did it!" and are ready to move on and tackle the next task.
Owing to the fact that I was an adult learner, I obtained a Bachelor's of Arts in English Literature in 2005 while working full-time. I feel that this experience gave me vital insight into the challenges of learning in an environment where the majority of students were young adults and didn't yet have the responsibilities of the real world. Key characteristics that I exhibited throughout my college career and which allow for my continued success are patience, organization, effective time management, an outstanding work ethic, and a positive attitude.
With my enthusiasm for children, I chose to take several courses in the field of Elementary Education. In addition to my coursework in college, I have an extensive understanding of the psychology of children and have 15+ years experience as a full-time nanny. My duties over the years as a nanny have always involved managing the children's and family's schedules, planning educational activities that stimulated all aspects of growth, assisting the children with their homework in a timely fashion, coordinating and tracking progress on school projects and teaching various problem-solving skills in order to succeed.
I consider myself a self-proclaimed "Word Nerd" and love all aspects of learning about words. In addition, I have a fondness for the Spanish language; I took 5 full years of the language in high school and an additional 4 years in college. I have tutored high school and college students struggling with reading, writing, listening and speaking Spanish. I feel very comfortable in the area of Spanish language.
When you choose me as a tutor, you receive my gift for getting learners of all ages excited about any subject and helping them discover the joy of learning. You will also encounter a highly energetic, self-motivated, fun-loving, creative, patient and reliable individual. The greatest joy in my life is assisting students in the realization of their full potential while offering praise, encouragement and support. I am very excited to meet with you and look forward to your correspondence! Hello, my name is Becky and I am currently a Master's student at the University of Rochester. Becky was great. She came to the lesson well prepared. She engaged my 14 year old son in Spanish and was extremely helpful! She met with us on very short notice which was much appreciated.
Becky was so kind and patient. My son was able to work with her from the minute we arrived at the library. I showed her my son's report card and she was able to see where he was struggling. I truly appreciate her professionalism and my son was happy to read books to her. For children in need of a tutor, I recommend Becky.
Over all, Ms. Becky is a blast to work with! She brings her personality into her tutoring with her, and makes it fun and engaging. She's very prepared, and works hard to make sure that her students feel as prepared as she is. I would recommend working with Ms. Becky to any student!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I earned my Bachelors of Arts in English Literature in 2005; during my college career I took several Elementary/Inclusive Education courses while completing observations within elementary school classrooms to supplement these courses.
In addition to my college experience, I have enthusiastically worked as a nanny for over 14 years, and am capable of encouraging and communicating well with young children in order to help them develop in their earliest academic years. Since school children learn intellectually and behaviorally at their own pace, I feel my high level of patience is an asset.
The best thing about Mathematics is that there is ALWAYS an answer, the key is finding it!
Using what I learned from the course titled: "Mathematics for Elementary Teachers" I will address the skills necessary for the unit at hand, give systematic and explicit instruction, use visual representations when necessary, ask the student to think aloud (verbalize their thinking), and assist the student in working through different problem-solving options.
Throughout my college career of writing countless papers I cannot emphasize the importance of editing and proofreading in order to convey what you are intending the reader to understand.
Editing and proofreading go hand-in-hand to ensure the written passage does not contain careless errors. I will help the student learn how to successfully edit for content, structure, clarity, style and proper use of citations when necessary. The goal will be to produce a piece of writing that is well-organized, possesses successful transitions within paragraphs, as well as between paragraphs, and contains evidence that backs up the argument.
When you teach a child to read you give them the key to the world, the ability to travel anywhere, and the possibility to learn about anything and everything!
In order to demonstrate the joys of and find the value in reading, I will promote literacy by motivating and engaging the student through the use of phonics, spelling, reading comprehension and vocabulary.
I have always had an immense love of the Spanish language since I was introduced to it in Middle School; I actually have an attentiveness for all languages in general. I'm fluent in both English and Spanish.
I studied Spanish for 5 years during Middle School/High School and an additional 4 years in college. While in High School I passed the Spanish Regents Exam, a New York State standardized exam, with an astounding score of 98. I mistakenly studied for the Mathematics Regents Exam the evening prior and was shocked when I received my test score. It was then that I knew I had the wonderful ability to excel in Spanish.
It should be noted that while in High School I received a New York State Regents Diploma; this is an optional diploma typically for college-bound students that must earn appropriate credits in a number of specific subjects by passing year-long or half-year courses, after which they must pass Regents Examinations in some of the subject areas.
I have successfully tutored high school and college-level students in all areas of Spanish: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In addition, I have found that learning a second language enhances the student's ability to further understand the English language.
While there is no single approach that is best for all students when learning to spell, I will offer the student auditory (hearing the correct spelling), visual (seeing the correct spelling), and kinesthetic ("hands on") experiences in order to best serve them.
I will teach words that make sense to the student, give the foundation for spelling words correctly by understanding sounds, help to simplify spelling by providing spelling lists with similar patterns, and present a great deal of practice in several different formats.
You know the old saying: "A dog is man's best friend?" Well, I truly believe that the DICTIONARY is your best friend. I am a self-proclaimed 'Word Nerd' and find great pleasure in learning, not only the definition of new words each day, but also discovering new ways in which to say the same thing.
You can NEVER have too many words in your word bank; exhibiting a vast vocabulary enhances an individual's written and spoken communication. Possessing a powerful vocabulary is linked to reading comprehension and acquiring a great deal of knowledge. I feel the importance of vocabulary should not be understated and pledge to work my hardest to improve the student's vocabulary.
Great writing is always worth the effort and should be considered a lifelong asset. Whether writing for school or simply just composing a quick note to someone, it's important to be able to convey the information for which you are intending.
For some, writing can present several unnecessary problems, I can help formulate your thoughts and put them on paper in a clear and concise manner. I'll inspire creativity and encourage critical thinking with focused writing assignments when necessary.
