I worked over 25 years at Kodak. My background is in Electrical Engineering and I have also done computer support. I have a master's degree from Georgia Tech in electrical engineering. I have a lot of math, science, computer, and electrical engineering experience. I also have experience with UNIX, Linux, and Windows and with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
I haven't done any formal teaching, but I have done a fair amount of training in my job. When I was in college as an undergraduate I taught review sessions to my friends to help them prepare for tests. In high school, I volunteered to tutor inner-city school children in reading. I also helped a friend of mine who had trouble with calculus. I really enjoy helping others and people tell me I am very patient. I am very good at approaching topics without assuming any knowledge on the part of the person I am teaching. I worked over 25 years at Kodak. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with computers since I was in high school in the early 1970's. In my career in electronics design, I worked with computers continually. I have done programming in a lot of different languages including Fortran, Basic, Pascal, and C. I have used a variety of scripting languages including Tcl/tk, Perl, and Python. I have also done shell script programming, primarily in C shell, and in some Bourne shell. I also taught a class for the Computers merit badge for the Boy Scouts of America.
I have an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech. While an undergraduate I ran review sessions for fellow students before tests in E.E. classes. For tutoring I will use the text and handouts used by the students' class and work out problems given there. I might also use problems from my own classes when I was a student.
As an engineer and also project leader, I used Excel all the time. In my personal life I use it to keep track of finances and also organize information in my job search.
I have taken a two classes in PERL and used it for a number both in my work and for personal use. I tutored a student taking a class at RIT a couple years ago and received a good rating. I worked with the student on labs he was having trouble with and coached him on the thought processes for creating the program to solve the problem.
I am a electrical engineer, so I have an extensive math background. I enjoy helping others learn. This has been an important and rewarding part of my career.
