About Lawrence

I have been tutoring since 2004 and I have worked for the a local school district and several tutoring services. I have worked with students needing supplemental tutoring, with students having special needs, and students who have emotional issues. I have tutored grades 3-12 and children who were cognitively challenged. I have excellent computer skills, writing skills and specialize in Math and Science. I feel equally comfortable tutoring English and Social Studies and am licensed as an assistant teacher in the state of New York.

I hold a degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Miami (BSIE) and have worked in both the private and public sectors. I worked for a Fortune 500 company and a metropolitan transportation authority. I also have completed 24 credits towards an MBA.

I like to think of myself as a jack of all trades, very organized and methodical and work well with students of all nationalities, races, religions. I can easily relate to people since I have lived in several locations, here and abroad and have worked at different types of jobs. I also have personal life experience which has trained me to be very empathetic and patient.

I am also very resourceful and advise students where to locate information, especially on the Internet. I encourage students to find the best method of learning that suits them best and above all, I train them to think on their own. I will lead them to a correct answer and a clearer understanding of subject matter by asking them questions which test their knowledge. In this manner they see what needs to be learned and practiced.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have been a tutor since 2004. I have worked for the Rush-Henrietta Central School, local tutoring services, as well as other online tutoring services.

I have a degree in Industrial Engineering and have worked in the private and public sectors.

I specialize in Math and Science but am approved by Wyzant to tutor other diverse subjects as well.

So, if a student requires tutoring in several subjects there is a good chance I can tutor those subjects!

Algebra 2

I have been tutoring Algebra since 2004, for a local school district and several tutoring services.

I specialize in Math and Science and I am very good at discerning what a student does not understand and correcting the problem. I also have a knack of making a difficult subject easy to understand.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been tutoring since 2004 and have tutored several children in this age group. One was a special needs student who cognitively challenged. I taught him basic reading, basic math - adding, subtraction, etc. even how to tell time, and the difference between right and left. I devised games to teach him basic skills so he would fun while learning. I think out-of-the box.

English

I'm an avid reader and an excellent writer, having had articles published in newspapers.

I am also an editor and e-mail four articles a week to a mailing list of approximately 125 newspaper and magazine editors.

Geometry

I have tutored Geometry on a steady basis and this school year most of my tutoring assignments have been for Geometry.

I understand the problems students have with Geometry. When I was in high school many years ago I asked others for help. For that reason I know how to simplify it and make it much less intimidating and understandable!

Hebrew

I studied Hebrew in school since elementary school and studied in Israel for 3 years and lived there for another 7 months.

Marketing

I have 24 credits toward an MBA and I took a course in Marketing management. I also have practical experience in advertising and retail sales.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Outlook for years along with an online e-mail and have them linked. I am familiar with all the functions in Outlook, phonebook, etc.

Microsoft Windows

I spend most of my day on a computer for many years. I am also an industrial engineer, am very organized, perform regular maintenance on my computer, and at one time my job was troubleshooting computer problems, and ordering computer for my department.

Public Speaking

As an Industrial Engineer for a Fortune 500 computer giant I gave presentations on a regular basis, using charts, graphs, and management reports. They were very organized easy to understand, and catered to management needs.

Study Skills

I have taught study skills and even when I am tutoring I teach my students how to study and prepare for tests. I have several books that I use. One is a workbook, Programmed Study Technique which utilizes the PQRST method which I find very useful and effective.
