About Stephen

Hello everyone!

My name is Stephen P. and I am an undergraduate student at the University of Rochester (Majors: Brain & Cognitive Science and Biology; Minors: American Sign Language and Psychology). I offer very effective, personal tutoring either in person or online. My goal is to help you reach your full potential by learning at a pace that is best for you.

Over the past few years I have successfully tutored both high school and fellow college students. This success is evident by their increased knowledge in the subjects, as well as by their improved grades! I graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA and currently have a 3.96 GPA in my college-level classes. These classes include (but are not limited to) ASL, Biology, Brain & Cognitive Science, Calculus, Chemistry, Effective Speaking, English, Math, Microbiology, and Psychology. Recent teaching experience has been as a paid Teaching Assistant for "Organic Chemistry" and "Foundations of Cognitive Science."

For those preparing for standardized tests, I have a plethora of test prep knowledge and experience from taking the MCAT, ACT, PSAT, and preparing for the SAT (did not take). I scored in the 96% for the MCAT (99% for the psychology section), earned a 34 Composite score on the ACT (36 English, 34 Math, 35 Reading, 32 Science), and scored 212 on the PSAT. Additionally, I have scored 5's on the Statistics and Psychology AP Tests. Having myself used materials of study from various publishers, I know many different ways to improve one's scores in all these tests.

As a tutor, I want to improve one's understanding of whatever they are interested in learning. To do so, we will work together at a pace best suited for you, and use materials that cater to your individual learning style. So, please take the first step and contact me to discover how I can begin helping you! Thank you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I scored a 36 on the ACT English Section. This, along with having used many different learning methods as I studied for the test has given me many different means with which to help improve my student's scores.

ACT Math

I scored a 34 on the ACT Math Section.

ACT Reading

I scored a 35 on the ACT Reading Section.

ACT Science

I scored a 32 on the ACT Science Section.

Algebra 1

I have experience working with students who have never been exposed to Algebra before, as well as those who just need a brush-up on the subject. I believe in helping them learn in a way that best fits their learning style.

Algebra 2

I have experience working with students who have never been exposed to Algebra before, as well as those who just need a brush-up on the subject. I believe in helping them learn in a way that best fits their learning style.

Bible Studies

Having been involved with the Church for my entire life, I have been involved in studying the scriptures and conversing about its stories and meanings.

Biology

As a Biology major, I have a wide breadth of knowledge concerning biological systems. This knowledge has come from both college classes and previous research I was involved with.

At the University of Rochester, I have taken (and excelled in) their Calculus courses. With this knowledge, I have been able to help a wide range of students with different learning styles excel.

Chemistry

Here at the University of Rochester, I have taken and excelled in the basic chemistry courses, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. Recently, I was a Teaching Assistant for college organic chemistry. Not only do I help you with the material, but I also help you learn how to think about the material.

Chess

My main chess experience comes from being involved with the New Oxford HS Chess team for the past 6 years (2007-2012). For the last 5 years I was a competing member (top 5 boards) and for the last 2 I was their 1st board. My duties as 1st board included instruction of the other players in opening strategy and tactics. Also, I created puzzles and tutorials that are still being used by the team since my graduation.

Outside of my High School chess team I've coached many students of all ages new to, or with a knowledge of, chess. Even in college I have worked to keep my skills sharp. In short, I love the game of chess and want to impart my love of the game to those I tutor.

Geometry

I have experience working with students who have never been exposed to Geometry before, as well as those who just need a brush-up on the subject. I believe in helping them learn in a way that best fits their learning style.

MCAT

I scored in the 96th percentile on the new MCAT. Scoring well on this difficult test requires 1) a good schedule, 2) good resources, and 3) a good insight into how this exam will unfold.

Organic Chemistry

At the University of Rochester, I have taken (and excelled in) both of their Organic Chemistry courses/Labs. As a result, the following semester I was a Teaching Assistant for Organic Chemistry. My experience with teaching this topic has developed into a tactic of helping one learn the material along with helping them learn the ins and outs of this new "language."

Physical Science

With a strong science background, I am well equipped to help my student best learn the wide range of topics covered in Physical Science.

Public Speaking

Having taken a college speaking course (acing the class— some of my presented material is now used as examples for other students by the professor) and performed public speaking myself on numerous occasions, I am equipped with methods and knowledge to help others become better public speakers as well. I do this by helping them overcome their fears, thoroughly prepare and effectively learn the means of presenting before an audience. Through previous tutoring, I have helped many students become better public speakers, both in high school and college.

SAT Math

Although I never took the SAT exam, I did spend time preparing for the exam with a wide variety of study materials. During this time I have developed effective strategies to improve test performance. (See my ACT Math performance as evidence of this)
