About Jean

I love teaching high school, college, and adult students! My students consider me to be organized, upbeat, humorous, and creative. Learning tough subjects does not have to be a grind or scary. My students can achieve lots of small victories at every session and I am ready with positive and constructive feedback. I enjoy getting to know each student and assessing his/her learning style, so that together, we can develop achievable goals and, hopefully have some fun amidst the hard work.

I have enjoyed opportunities in teaching, tutoring, and training in many settings. At three Rochester NY colleges, I have been an adjunct instructor and tutor in writing, public speaking, literature, and more. One of my favorite experiences has been in tutoring English speaking, writing, and American culture to new adult and teen refugees from many countries on several continents.

Much of career has been in nonprofit and small business management, and in my consulting business, I have delivered corporate and nonprofit training in management and marketing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

ADD/ADHD isn't "exotic" any more. The diagnosis isn't just limited to that extra-busy little boy in the first row. Diagnosed or not, many of us struggle all day, every day, to keep focused, to keep organized, and accomplish something. The good news is that society understands ADD/ADHD so much better these days. An abundance of practical, successful strategies for children, teens and adults is available everywhere.

How to make those strategies work for you? I would start by having you explain where you struggle most in your studies: Focus? Organization? Starting? Finishing? Concentrating? I know these frustrations firsthand, but I have had success in (mostly)conquering them. Together we will set some specific goals so we can see where you've made progress. In my teaching, I always try to build in the solutions that have worked for me, and add other techniques specific to your needs. You will discover that it doesn't need to be so frustrating. We can do it!

Public Speaking

Public speaking is one of my favorite subjects to teach, because many students arrive in a state of panic and dread, and by the end, actually look forward to expressing themselves. I always start by addressing the question of how to tame your butterflies, and then slowly move on to short introductions, one minute speeches, and gradually work toward 5-7 minutes speeches. We'll work together on speech organization, subject choice, use of language, and speaking style. One of my strengths is my style--constructive, humorous, encouraging. Two of the most popular lessons are on descriptive speeches ("Describe a great or terrible vacation.") and persuasive speeches (all the tools you need to convince others to agree with you!).

Some of my favorite public speaking students have been teen and adult college students, business professionals, unemployed workers, and even political candidates. I also have enjoyed working on communication skills with new refugees from several continents.

SAT Reading

Many students consider the SAT Reading section to be drudgery they have to wade through. Some passages seem boring; others are just too complicated to retain. Some questions appear to be ambiguous or obscure. All true! I am dedicated to helping students improve their scores. Our sessions are, of course, filled with reading comprehension strategies, but I also incorporate test-taking and study skills, as well as some "insider secrets" from very successful test-takers. Our sessions will be very focused, but I like to build in some good humor and positive reinforcements. There WILL be visible victories!

Study Skills

Struggling to sit down and get started studying? Frustrated at trying organize the mass of reading material so you can take small, memorable bites, instead of trying to gobble it all down at once? (Indigestion follows!) Aggravated at the writing assignment from the moment you start staring at that big, blank page? Angry at yourself for not being able to finish that blasted book or that ridiculous essay?

Fear no more! You are not alone! I have lived with these frustrations for many years. Some of my problems came from some undiagnosed ADD and some from a lack of confidence. This certainly applies to many high school students as well as adults. In my teaching, I try to build in the solutions that have worked for me, and add other techniques specific to your needs. Learning really should be fun--or at least not heartburn-producing. We can do it!

Great Tutor! — I have had many tutors for my daughter but none as impressive as Jean. She sensed my daughter's apprehension right away and instantly knew how to connect with her. My daughter is actually looking forward to their next session. ...
