About Franklin

I have been involved in the martial arts for over ten years and received my first black-belt in Tae-Kwon-Do in 2009. Currently I am 3rd degree black-belt. Throughout my experience as an instructor, I have worked with students of all ages, including pre-school children, teens, adults and seniors. I have taught individually one-on-one and groups of up to 30 students. My personal philosophy is to teach more just than self-defense. In addition to traditional Tae-Kwon-Do self-defense, my classes implement meditation and aerobic and strengthening exercises. Through the martial arts, I strive to inspire my students and clients to pursue a meaningful lifestyle, through cultivating healthy eating and thinking habits. I remind my students and clients that mastery of self-defense is only a means to an end. Ultimately, the goal of the martial arts is to achieve health and well-being. This is achieved by getting to know one’s true self through meditation and self expression.

In my teaching, I draw from my many years as a martial arts instructor and implement what I have gained from my academic background. I recently graduated Hunter College with separate bachelor’s degrees in psychology and comparative religion. I completed course-work in biology and chemistry, in addition to my experience in biomedical research. Also, I from my Native American heritage, I draw spiritual wisdom and practices, such as, meditation and appreciation of nature.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
