Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have been tutoring English and teaching ESL for over 10 years. I have tutored English in the areas of reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary and have taught a wide range of ESL courses at two language schools in NYC. Additionally I teach English online to everyone from children to business professionals. I received my CELTA certificate in ESOL teaching from Cambridge University and received my Bachelor of Arts from NYU, a top university in the U.S., where I graduated with honors.

ESL/ESOL

I am a native English speaker who graduated with honors from a NYU, a top university in the U.S. I received the renowned CELTA certificate in ESOL teaching from Cambridge University, and I have over 10 years of tutoring experience. I currently teach at both an online ESL school based in Hong Kong and a top language school in NYC, where I teach mainly TOEFL prep courses, but also level English courses, Fluency Development courses, and Vocabulary courses.

Grammar

The importance of proper grammar cannot be underestimated with today's focus on strong writing skills. I have taught English level courses from Basic to Post Advanced levels, all of which have focused on building the foundations of English through its grammar systems. Through my experience teaching and my exceptional education, I have gained extensive knowledge of grammar rules and know how to effectively teach this to my students through activities that are fun and engaging.

Proofreading

Proofreading is a skill that is developed over time. Knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary as well as writing organization, cohesion, and logical sequencing are paramount. I try to target each of these skill sets in my lessons and focus on developing weaker areas. I am myself a writer and editor and have created and taught copywriting courses to professionals where we focused on the importance of editing for concise and effective writing. Whether you need help editing your child's essay, university research paper, or dissertation, I have a sharp eye that can easily spot inconsistencies and errors in writing and I will teach you how to do the same.

Reading

Reading has been a component of every class I've taught, both online and in the classroom. I have a lot of experience with young learners, including both native and non-native English speakers. I am adept at finding texts that are level-appropriate and match the interests of my students to keep them engaged throughout the lesson. I try to make my reading lessons fun and focus on developing specific skill sets, such as comprehension, reading speed, vocabulary, and reading aloud / pronunciation. I have also taught many reading courses in an ESL context to adults, and stress the importance of reading on developing writing skills.

TOEFL

I am currently teaching my fourth 2-month long TOEFL prep course at New York Language Center, a top language school in NYC. These courses are highly intensive 3-hour courses which meet 4 times per week for 2 months. In total, I have taught over 350 hours of TOEFL preparation to classrooms of 20+ students and continually receive positive feedback from my students on my teaching, which has proven results in increased TOEFL scores. I employ a wide variety of teaching techniques to fit every student's individual learning needs and am committed to keeping my students motivated until test day.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is absolutely key to learning a second language. I have taught a wide variety of English courses, all of which have had a strong vocabulary component, where I focus on the meaning, form, and pronunciation of words. I have taught a Post-Advanced Vocabulary course at New York Language Center, and I also teach TOEFL courses, which have a very strong emphasis on vocabulary. With my unique teaching technique of combining receptive and productive language skills, students are able to understand and use new words effectively.

Writing

I have taught numerous writing courses, mainly in an ESL context, to both children and adults, both online and in the classroom. I have extensive knowledge on grammar rules and sentence structure and am adept at teaching students how to write effectively and how to make their writing interesting and unique. I have taught essay writing, copywriting, creative/narrative writing, and nonfiction writing courses. I also teach TOEFL courses, which has a strong writing component, where we focus on building the foundations of a good essay.
