Making art can help students of all ages communicate better with the world around them. No matter their age or ability, exploring and experimenting though visual means can unlock one's individual voice and help better understand the way they learn in general.
Developing a cohesive body of work for a high school portfolio can be a daunting task. Artist and instructor Matthew Mahler will privately guide your child in developing a well-rounded, age appropriate and personal selection of art works that best represent their abilities and vision.
Through one-on-one instruction, Matthew will assess your child’s abilities in order to draw attention to their strengths and improve upon their weaknesses all the while keeping your child’s artistic voice present. Students will develop a unique body of work that is rooted in observation and explore various mediums such as pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, ink, watercolor and acrylic paint. Courses run for 10 week sessions and classes are 90 minutes long. Each class session will culminate with a homework assignment that reinforces and draws upon the techniques and ideas explored in class.
Matthew is a practicing artist living in Ridgewood, Queens. As a recipient of a Bachelor of Science in Art Education at Hofstra University and Masters in Art from CUNY Queens College, Mahler has worked with artists as young as 3 years old to those post-college and professional. Currently Matthew teaches enrichment art classes during the school year at Little Red School House in the West Village, and is an Art Specialist in their Art Camp at Summers at LREI since 2008. He is also currently a teaching artist in the residency program with STUDIO in a School. Matthew has extensive experience instructing life drawing and location drawing along side illustrator, Jeff Fisher at The Long Island Drawing Studio and is very comfortable working with students developing their perceptual skills, to those investigating larger conceptual problems.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Strong observational drawing skills are the foundation of any visual endeavor as they allow us to communicate bigger ideas more effectively. From early on in my art making practice, I studied with a professional illustrator and in turn was exposed to many tried and true techniques that help any artist better communicate his or her ideas. From early on, I coach my students through a series of drawing problems specifically developed to strengthen their perceptual and observational skills, giving them the confidence they need in order to tackle more experimental problems down the road.
Similarly to drawing, painting is rooted in one's ability to depict what they "see" in front of them. I understand the importance of and teach my students to have strong observational skills early on in order to give them the tools necessary to approach more experimental and abstract problems down the road. Through one-to-one instruction, I instruct and demonstrate the many techniques necessary for a inspiring painter to push their limits as an artist.
