We have been working with Robert for the last two months. He has been really patient with my son and very helpful. We have seen an improvement in our son's grades and homework skills. My son says he is really helpful and knowledgeable. He really enjoys working with him.
Robert "Erik" is very patient with my 4th, soon to be 5th, grader. My son struggles with fine motor skills. Erik strived to make a connection of interest with him to calm his nerves. Even though my son did not finish the test, he reassured him that he did an excellent job and that he could finish the rest at the next session. Erik was more than willing to answer my questions as an inquiring parent.
I hold a master's degree in Elementary Special Education from Hunter College in New York City. I hold dual state certification in teaching general education and education to students with disabilities. I qualified to teach all core subjects, including: math, science, reading, writing, geography, etc., at the elementary level.
As a certified teacher, I have spent years teaching phonics using a variety of techniques: The Wilson Reading System, Recipe for Reading, Words Their Way, and Rime to Read. I also use GLASS analysis, which involves isolating particular phonemes in words.
As part of my Master's Degree training, I studied public speaking techniques. I am well versed in breathing relaxation exercises (as a warm-up to speaking in public), articulation exercises (including phonetic emphasis and isolation), and standards of speaking (how to modify a thought into a presentable speech-sentence during a presentation). I also do exercises to improve eye contact and maintain muscle relaxation during a presentation.
Special Needs can refer to either a need for instructional adaptations to address cognitive impairments of a particular student, or, sometimes more inclusively, co-morbid cognitive and physical disabilities. I am a state certified in Elementary Special Education, trained to modify curriculum to help a student perform optimally.
I am certified in Elementary Special Education (grades 1-6). Part of my specialization includes teaching students study techniques: mappping (writing a brief summary of a paragraph after reading it), SQ3R, and acronym mnemonic techniques. I also help students organize their study materials into important categories before they begin preparing for an exam.
