I have been teaching in the higher education sector for over 10 years. I am an alumna of New York University and I am currently teaching academic writing at Pace University, where I have taught for 8 years. I have taught undergraduate and graduate students at different capacities. Most have been international students, the target population being from India, Taiwan and China. I have learned how to bridge culture gaps with my students and they have reached their full potential in an environment that is conducive to learning. My trajectory as an educator has enabled me to accommodate each student's learning style. Additionally, I have employed different methodologies to enhance the education experience and I have used a myriad of strategies to pinpoint a student's weakness in writing, reading or speaking, for example, in order to understand how to make his/her vulnerability a strength.
As a result, through my background in TESOL and Spanish Linguistics, I have had the privilege of learning and teaching language, English and Spanish, with a multicultural sensitivity. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught the IELTS along with TOEFL for several years. The IELTS is mostly focused on listening and speaking unlike the TOEFL which focuses on the English language more comprehensively and emphasizes reading and writing. I have used a myriad of strategies to teach the IELTS, for example, recordings of student's oral production and listening for main ideas, details and inferences. The primary objective of the IELTS is to communicate well.
I have a Masters in TESOL/Linguistics (Spanish) from New York University. I have taught Spanish at the beginner, and intermediate level for several years.
