I have been an educator since 2000 working both in public and non-public schools in the New York City and Long Island areas. I am New York State certified in the area of Students with Disabilities grades 1-6. Prior to becoming an educator, I worked in New York City as a Child Protective Specialist working with abused and neglected children in Queens, NY. I became a teacher to work in depth with young people in efforts to secure and protect their futures from the violence that can threaten their destinies.
No student gets to a place of academic success without a great source of support. I am an advocate of children succeeding, especially when the odds are stacked against them and there are distractions and impediments in their way. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified to work with students with disabilities grades 1-6. I have managed individual educational plans with a specific focus on managing academic goals as related to the common core state standards recently implemented by New York. I just completed the school year in an ICT first grade class in which I instructed a small group of 7 special needs students integrating them into the general ed curriculum. At the end of the year, only one made little to no progress in their individual academic goals. The rest progressed on to second grade.
