About Emily

I am currently a Lecturer for the City University of New York at Queensborough Community College in both the English and Speech Departments. I hold a Master’s degree in English Language and Literature, and have taught and tutored in New York City for over nine years at both public and private institutions.

During my career, I have specialized in tutoring high school, undergraduate, and graduate-level reading comprehension and writing, as well as academic research, grammar, vocabulary, public speaking, and presentation skills. I also have a long record of proven success helping students construct scholarship, college, and study abroad application essays.

In my tutoring sessions, I make sure that each student fully understands the assigned task, brainstorms, organizes his/her ideas, and is able to produce writing on the topic. My goal is that every student leaves a tutoring session with a clear plan of the steps he/she can do next.

I am generally available for tutoring every day from 10am to 7pm, and I work out of my home office.

Reading, writing, and speaking are skills you will need your whole life. Please contact me so we can start improving your abilities now!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a Magna Cum Laude Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature from the Macaulay Honors College program at Queens College. I have also received my Master's degree in English, and I currently teach introductory composition and literature courses for the English Department of Queensborough Community College. I worked in the on-campus Writing Center tutoring English to native and non-native speakers for seven years.

Grammar

I have Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English and have taught and tutored high school and college level writing for over nine years. I have also worked in a college Writing Center and as a Writing Consultant helping students improve their grammar through worksheets, reading, and essay writing. In my current position as an English Instructor for CUNY, I incorporate mini-grammar lessons into my classes on a weekly basis and work with my students during office hours to help them improve the grammar in their paper revisions.

Public Speaking

I currently teach a mandatory Speech Communication course for the City University of New York. I also taught public speaking and presentation skills classes for four years at NYU. Additionally, I have presented papers at seven regional conferences, serving as both a panel chair and a panelist. I have tutoring experience working with native and non-native speakers to improve their pronunciation, vocabulary, PowerPoint slides, and professional presence.
