CUNY Queens College (Neuroscience)
Hi there! I am a math and physical sciences tutor looking to help students understand and prepare for the material that is tested on critical exams such as SAT, SAT II, ACT, Advanced Placement, and Regents. It is my personal belief that every student has the ability to score well on any and all of these exams if there are two things present. Firstly, a dedicated instructor whose approach fits to the learning style of the student; and secondly, a passion for the subject. It is then practically guaranteed that the student will learn fast and receive a near perfect, if not perfect score, in a stimulating environment.
A little bit about myself. I have over 100 hours of experience tutoring ACT and SAT students and I have seen them all increase their scores considerably in short periods of no longer than 2-3 months. I am an Undergraduate student majoring in Neuroscience with over 200+ hours of lab experience working closely with pioneers in the field at Columbia University Medical Center. I place in the top five percent in my class and hold the Deans List Award for all consecutive semesters thus far. Throughout High School I also placed in the top 3 percentile, competed in the New York City Science and Engineering Fair and won Second award and later went on to compete at Intel. I was both a member of the National Honor Society and participated in Math Team for 4 years. Departmental Recognition Award in Mathematics and Biology Research. AP Biology-5, AP Psychology-5, AP Calculus-5, AP English-5. SAT Math-780. All Regents 95+)
Students with a 450/800 average on SAT Math tend to score 700+/800 and get 4's or 5's on the AP and 90+ after my tutoring sessions because I show them efficient ways to solve problems instead of just writing a theoretical statement and equation, which just leaves most students wondering and saying to themselves, "What in the world is this teacher talking about?"
I conduct tutoring for usually 2-4 hours per session. Most of the tutoring is problem solving since that is what the students actually need in order to completely understand a subject or topic. I also give follow up take home tests that are fairly hard that I make up. I grade the tests after completion and go over the answers with the student in depth. After a series of tutoring sessions, the student should be capable of acing any test.
Minimize class time; maximize results.
Near-perfect scores are absolutely attainable, but you can't afford to waste time. Work that can be done on your own, I will assign - copiously - as homework; work that can only be done in real time with a tutor, we will do in class. Every minute of class will be leveraged so that it packs the absolute maximum punch. The bottom line: crank up the time you spend with the test, and maximize how effectively our time (and your money!) is spent.
Long-term tutoring available.
For students with high aspirations but a long way to go, a longer period of tutoring becomes necessary. I have extensive experience with such students, and am happy to help them bridge the gap. The key is learning at your comfort level, but achieving rapid progress via high volume and efficiency; we will start with materials appropriate to your level, and work systematically up to near perfect score levels. I conduct sessions of about 2 hours each with the selected student.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have received A's in both Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 and have scored in the 90th percentile on the Chemical ACS exam. My approach involves understanding the principle mechanisms involved and working up to more involved synthesis problems.
I have scored 90+ on all of my Regents exams in high school. I have tutored at Kumon learning center for 2 years, most of which where high school students studying for various Regents and AP exams.
