About Alan

I have been a professional photographer and consultant for over 40 years. My teaching philosophy is to teach the student what he or she wants to learn during each session. I encourage the student to learn at their own pace. My students learn by doing. The best way to learn how to do something is to jump in and do it.

I show my students what each piece of their equipment can do and how to use it to it's maximum capabilities. Upon completion of each session the student will have confidence in their ability to use their equipment.

Photography is an ever changing medium. With the software available today the photographer can do things that were almost impossible before digital became available. Let me show you how to use your image editing software to it's advantage.

I have also been shooting and editing video over the course of my career. I have produced and directed programming for Queens Public Television and other clients. I can teach you how to make your home video exciting through use of camera techniques and editing.

I would be happy to discuss your needs with you to set up a course of instruction that will make you a better image maker.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

Photoshop is an extensive photo editing software program that can make your photographs really stand out from the ordinary. Photoshop's user interface can be intimidating at first, but with a little show and tell you'll know what all the buttons, symbols and menu options can do.

We can start with color correcting your photographs with the levels tool so they all have the correct color. Next you'll learn to adjust the exposure.

I can show you how to remove or cleanup backgrounds. Remove wrinkles, blemishes and scars from a portrait. Remove objects and even people from your images.

Once you have the image looking like you want it to look I can show you methods for sharpening the image and creating a border around your photograph.

The possibilities are endless. I'd be happy to answer your questions. Let me know what you would like Photoshop to do for you?

General Computer

As a professional photographer utilizing digital files, it became necessary to master the computer platforms that have been presented to me through the years.

While I am familiar with Microsoft's Windows operation systems, it is the Apple Macintosh operating system that I have become expert in using and teaching.

Let me help you learn your new Mac or Windows computer. I'd be happy to answer any questions. Feel free to ask!

"THINK DIFFERENTLY" that was the Apple advertising campaign when the first Macintosh computer came on the market.

I have been thinking differently for most of my computing life. I have vast experience using Mac computers let me help you learn to use yours.

Your Mac experience starts with the operating system or OS. Mac OSX is very user friendly but many people never learn to take advantage of it's features. I can show you how to make different accounts, setup a network, install and configure printers, scanners and your camera.

Your Mac came equipped with the iLife software package which includes iPhoto and iMovie. I can show you how to edit your photographs using iPhoto. If you shoot video I can teach you how to use iMovie to edit and share your home video productions.

Have a specialized software package you need to install and learn to use? Let me help you install and learn your new software.

Mac computers are easy to use but they are not infallible. I can teach you how to connect external hard drives and create a backup routine in case you have a disaster.

Let me help you also learn to "THINK DIFFERENTLY"

I picked up my first camera when I was 9 years old. 51 years later I'm still shooting and making photographs.

While a student in high school I was the school's photographer and was in charge of the darkroom and all print making. After high school I attended the School of Visual Arts in NYC. At SVA we were taught studio photography, photo journalism and art history. But most importantly we were taught how to think. I graduated from SVA with a BFA in photography.

I then went to work in many studios doing still life and portrait photography. I have also been a technical consultant to professional photographers. Today I continue to photograph still life and make portraits.

Now YOU have the opportunity to pick my brain of it's photographic knowledge.

Perhaps you finally purchased that professional camera you always wanted but are having a difficult time understanding the instruction manual and learning all your camera's features? I can teach you what all those buttons and symbols do.

Maybe you're an advanced amateur photographer and need a critique of your work because you want to advance to the next level. I can discuss your work with you to improve your skills.

You want to shoot fabulous portraits of your friends and family but can't figure out how to light and compose your portraits. I can help you with lens selection, composition and show you how to use natural and artificial light to make portraits that your subjects will love.

Perhaps you have shot many digital photographs but do not know how to edit and organize them. I can teach you how to use the image editing software that came with your camera. This would include color correction, sharpening, cropping and removing unwanted elements from a photograph. Then learning how to file these images so you'll know how to find them again.

During my 50 years of photographic experience I have learned a lot, now let me share some of my photographic knowledge with you. Tell me what YOU want to learn.

Video Production

I have been a film and video maker since 1985. I have produced and directed programming for Queens Public Television and Homegrown TV Productions. While working at QPTV I earned a best director and best cameraman awards for "Plane Talk" a model aviation interview show. At QPTV I also learned how to edit videotape. Today all editing is done digitally.

My students will learn how to operate their video equipment (camera and editing software). Students will also learn image composition, editing, sound and lighting. The student will learn at their own pace and choose the topic to be covered at each session.

Editing will cover storyline development, arraigning video clips, special effects like cutaways and picture in picture, cross dissolves, fades and wipes. Sound editing will also be covered.

Lighting will cover how to light a subject for an interview and how to add light to video while shooting outdoors.

Sound editing will teach the student how to add background music to their projects for drama and effect.

Upon completion of their project the student will learn to upload their finished video to social media and convert to DVD for sharing the project with others.
