About Jeannette

I am a great tutor. It is true, I have a wonderful ability to help you understand history and learn it. Not only that, but you will understand it so well, that you will end up loving it like I do. I didn't start out loving history or social studies. My teachers were boring and unenthusiastic. But it only takes one teacher to change that. One teacher to bring excitement and knowledge into your life and I am that teacher. I live and breath history, especially American history. I am well read in the founding of our nation, the American Revolution and the Civil War. I am very familiar with the multitude of opportunities that the Capital District of NY has for the students. I do civil war reenactments and participate in local historical societies. I have a master's degree in teaching social studies. I was certified for many years and let my certification expire. I am soon to re-certify and got an excellent score on my content specialty test.
As a teacher, I plan my lessons to be interactive and entertaining. The classroom is a place of discovery and students should want to know before they can learn. My lessons direct thought, but allow free thinking and questions to drive momentum. I worked in a private school as a social studies teacher. The school did not have school books or any sort of curriculum. I designed a curriculum around the classes the school wanted taught. My students came from different backgrounds and abilities and some struggled with school work. I planned projects with definite criteria, but many options for the students to demonstrate what they had learned. Some students wrote papers, some drew pictures, some acted out their project. As a classroom aide, very often my special needs students would have difficulty understanding the lesson. I would take the lesson and talk them through it and give examples that they could understand to help them gain deeper meaning. As a tutor, I find that trying to use another teacher's lessons is difficult. I, prefer instead, to take the topic of the lesson and plan my own lesson around it to give the student a deeper understanding and an interest in the subject. This way, the student wants to complete the work and is more invested in their learning. Once the student has completed my lesson, they can more easily complete their school teacher's lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

Bachelor's degree in history with an American history concentration, Master's in teaching social studies with an American History concentration, five years as an aide to students in both seventh- and eighth-grade social studies classes. Four years of Civil War research, interpretation and living history reenactment.

Archaeology

In my undergraduate work with a minor in anthropology, I studied archaeology and artifacts. I participated in archaeological digs, survey technique and artifact recovery and identification. I participated in the Fox Creek dig in 1996 where we found important flint knapping evidence as well as a hearth and stone projectiles. I was successful in my ability to read stratigraphy and mapping of land formation based on stratification of soils. This allowed us to understand the location of the creek in regards to the dig site at the time of the artifact deposit. This experience allows me to help students with their archaeology studies.

English

My original major in college was English before switching to History.

Religion

Not only did my undergraduate coursework consist of classes about world cultures and religions, but I also was a Sunday school teacher for many years. I became Sunday school superintendent of my church and held this office for 5 years. I have personally studied the religions of Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism/Daoism, and Shinto. I am familiar with Paganism, Wiccan practices and Druid practices. This allows me to present various religions in an unbiased way for education purposes.

Social Studies

My master's degree was attained through a social studies internship program and Sage Graduate School. I have a bachelor's degree in History as well. I taught social studies in a private school setting where I designed my own curriculum and spent 4 years as an aide to students in a junior high, spending class time in various social studies classes.

World History

I can teach World History and AP World History. For my undergraduate work, I took many classes for my history degree that were outside my concentration. These classes included but aren't limited to; History of the World, History of Japan, and World at War. As a graduate student, I took two courses in world history. I recently completed a training from the College Board on the 2015/16 AP World History curriculum. Since then, I have been successfully tutoring in AP World History.
