Empire State College (Mathematics and Information Systems)
My love of tutoring arises from the genuine excitement I see/hear when a student really starts to understand something they though was too hard. The joy is infectious! As a volunteer tutor at my college, I've had the pleasure of helping many students overcome their fear of math and technology.
My academic background is in Mathematics, Computational Sciences and Information Systems, and my tutoring experience to date has largely been with college students (Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Differential Equations) and with colleagues at work (Perl, SQL, Business Systems Analysis.) I am a largely self-taught programmer and have taken many independent study courses as part of my college background, so I know that with hard work and practice, it's possible to learn just about anything. I have been a lifelong learner in both my academic and professional careers, and want to share the excitement of discovery and the empowerment of understanding with as many people as I can.
My focus is on advanced mathematics and programming subjects, however, I'm also happy to work with students on their test prep and Regents mathematics. I believe that the best way to learn a subject is through practice, and so expect that most of each session will be spent working through problems -- and some practice problems will be assigned as homework as well!
I always start out with a free consultation meeting, not only to help us both understand the level at which the student is currently understanding the subject, but also to confirm that we'll communicate well together. I try to be flexible with time, and can arrange my schedule around sessions as needed. I do request a 24-hour cancellation notice, but can offer makeup sessions.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I actively tutor Discrete Mathematics for Empire State College, and have successfully helped 3 pass their courses already. Their class covers: introduction to logic and proofs, sets, functions, equivalence relations, combinations and permutations, graphs and proof by induction. As part of my own degree program via ESC, I also took this class, and achieved an A grade in it.
I took the Linear Algebra course through Empire State College and achieved an A grade. Additionally, one of my startup companies based their technology on a compression distance function, which was calculated via matrix manipulation, and as VP Engineering, I was responsible for presenting our technology.
