About Lori

Having been a teacher for several years, I have experienced first hand the excitement of seeing a student succeed in a difficult subject. Knowing that success is within reach for all students, I work diligently to demonstrate that the small gains lead to large rewards. We will work hard but the effort will pay off.

As a 6th, 7th, and 9th grade English teacher, I see a lot of struggling students who just need that little extra spark to build confidence. Many times a student will come to my class having struggled in elementary or middle school. His or her attitude is poor because he or she feels defeated, a failure. I feel it is a teacher's responsibility to build confidence through small gains. Not every student is able to celebrate the small gains, to see improvement or to feel a sense of pride in his or her work. I feel it is these small gains, these improvements, that we can build on to improve confidence. When a student feels a sense of confidence, there is nothing he or she cannot do. The student is willing to take risks, to use vocabulary, to build stronger sentences because he is unafraid of failure. The student knows that through hard work, perseverance and desire, he or she will improve.

I see my role as one that shapes how the student thinks about him or herself as a student as much as I am an instructor of English literature and writing. I truly love what I do and am passionate about English and the students who want to improve their reading and writing skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have been teaching middle and high school English for 10 years so I have a lot of experience teaching students of all abilities and those with unique challenges. ADD/ADHD students face specific challenges because of their ability to focus and attend. My experience has given me the skills necessary to help students focus, process information and retain that information in a more structured and efficient manner. These strategies include chunking information in manageable amounts, giving students breaks and reducing distractions.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a New York State certified teacher for grades 5-12. I have spent 9 years teaching 6th grade and am very familiar with the English Common Core and skills necessary to be a successful writer and reader. I am familiar with the math, social studies and science curriculum in grades K-7.

Regents

I have been teaching English for 9 years as well as scoring the English Regents for 8. As a high school English teacher, my role is to prepare students for the rigorous test so students read and analyze difficult passages as well as write critical lens essays that have a controlling idea and are well supported and well crafted. We break down multiple choice questions to analyze the types of questions being asked as well as analyze our writing to strengthen weak areas, focusing on sentence structure and grammar.

Special Needs

I am a New York State certified teacher, certified in English grades 5-12 with a Master's Degree and Administration certification. I work directly with special needs students on a daily basis, teaching reading and writing strategies, differentiating instruction and modifying assignments to assist the ADD/ADHD, learning disabled, dyslexic, and/or student with central auditory processing issues. I focus my instruction on not only learning the material but addressing anxiety issues. The strategies I employ focus the student on breaking down wordy questions, annotating and close reading strategies and using practice to help reduce anxiety levels.

Study Skills

In my ten years of teaching, I have seen many students struggle not because of lack of ability or motivation but from lack of study skills. I teach students how to study efficiently and effectively using notes and notecards, and to be able to analyze information and apply it. I teach how to process information and make sense of it by annotating and breaking down difficult passages so the student can use the information later as part of a written response or to answer a multiple choice question. Knowing how a student learns and processes information is vital to teaching meaningful study skills that help a student be successful in the classroom.
