About Nishani

I demonstrate all of the basic rules of chess: Movement of the pieces including all the conditions of castling, checkmate, check, all the conditions of a drawn game, how to properly set up a chess set and last but not least the rule of Enpassant.

I demonstrate all of the minimal checkmate techniques of the game. How to checkmate with King and Queen vs. King, King and Rook vs. King and even the more difficult King +Two Bishops and Bishop +Knight vs. King.

I teach the principals and basic stratagems of the three phases of the chess game (opening, middle game and endgame). I teach proper conduct and sportsmanship. Chess is only a game and potentially a wonderful way to mold our minds into being more logical and creative. Keep the game clean and remember that there is more to chess (and life) than winning at all costs.

National women's Chess Championship, Sri Lanka - 1980 - 2nd Place ; Inter Girls Schools Chess Championship, Sri Lanka - 1981 2nd Place (Under my captaincy); and Inter Girls Schools Chess Championship, Sri Lanka - 1982 2nd Place (Under my captaincy)--I have coached a school team for 5 years.

I perform the following things for students: Analyse your games and detect what you need to work on; develop your training plan; give you home tasks; answer your questions that arise via e-mails; check your last home task and provide feedback on your work; think about your overall progress; make necessary corrections in your training plan; plan your participation in tournaments; keep track of the current situation in chess (read chess news, observe main tournaments, notice new tendencies, popular openings, etc.).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I taught chess to two teams in high school during the years 1979-1982. I taught chess for adult members of the Sri Lanka Parliament staff during the years 1991-2014. I did private coaching for three students during the years 2012-2014.
