My name is Maggi. I am a certified special education teacher in New York and New Jersey. I have a master's degree in learning disabilities. I have taught both special and regular education in grades K-6 as well as worked as an educational evaluator in those grades. My job as an educational evaluator included assessing students with standardize tests for yearly evaluations. I also was a part of the remediation process, both writing and teaching individual goals for improvement. I have also taught the NY CORE curriculum in reading, language arts, and math. I am certified to assess pre-school children and am enrolled in the early childhood education program at LIU which will enable me to teach at a preschool level.
While I enjoy the assessing process, my primary focus is on the remediation. I enjoy working with children to reach their goals and watching them light up when a concept has broken through. What I can bring to my student at the diagnostic level is very important to the type of remediation that can be planned. I like to use their strength areas to combat their not so strong areas. For example if a child is struggling with regrouping in mathematics and has great memory skills I would concentrate on memorizing math facts before concentrating on the theory of regrouping. On the other hand, if a student struggles with memorization I might try using concrete representations of ones, tens, hundreds to explain concepts of borrowing and regrouping. It would depend on the child.
My goal is to help students become confident learners by using positive reinforcement that can be achieved if they gain success in difficult areas. My name is Maggi. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
