About Christopher

I am a certified classroom teacher and for more than 30 years I have taught and tutored students in second through tenth grade. Language arts, mathematics through Algebra, social studies, both Regents and Common Core prep, and much more. My strengths are in study skills and learning difficulties. I provide assessments, progress reports, and homework.

My goal is always the success of each student. I start where the student is, help them build on their strengths, give them the tools for success, and over time they become more independent learners.

Too many students learn math as separate tricks and techniques that make little sense. In addition to preparing for tests and covering curriculum I help the student grasp that math is patterns, math is elegant, math is a tool for understanding.

Words and language are fun. Certainly there are skills to be learned, grammar to be mastered, spelling to be memorized, vocabulary to be understood. But these are tools to support expressing yourself and playing with ideas.

My initial 30 minute consultation is at no cost - in person or through Skype. Contact me. I love to support students as they learn and grow.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught and tutored Algebra 1 with both middle school and high school students. I work with students that they strengthen their understanding of arithmetic and master the world of Algebra. I love the idea that equations design pictures (graphs) and that pictures (graphs) represent equations. I also love that essentially algebra is reasoning and simplifying in order to problem solve.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified K-6 teacher. I have taught in self contained classrooms in grades 2 through 5 inclusive. I have taught math, history, English, and science at the middle school level - grades 6 through 8 as well.

Elementary Math

Elementary math is a combination of skills, vocabulary, computation, problem solving, and concepts. I have taught and tutored math at the elementary school level for some thirty years. I strive for the student to see that math makes sense. Thus we work with the very tangible, with drawings and pictures, with numbers and numerals, and, as they are ready, with the very abstract. I support the child's work in class so their grades are strong. I help the child fill in whatever they may not have understood well in the past so that they become a stronger math student.

English

Learning English and language arts is a complex process of improving self expression. It includes essay writing, creative writing, grammar, parts of speech, sentence and paragraph structure, punctuation, spelling, reading for meaning and more. All in the service of effective written expression, reading, public speaking, and organizing one's thoughts.

I have taught English Language Arts in grades two through nine. I have tutored students in those grades and in all high school grades as well. I was an English major in college, and I have a graduate degree in Education.

Prealgebra

I have taught and tutored second through ninth grade over many years. Periodically throughout my career I have worked in curriculum development in arithmetic, pre algebra, and algebra. Thus I fully understand the scope and sequence of the math. The strongest learning in math comes though experience with concrete materials, drawings, and abstractions. Such solid understanding is the best preparation for Algebra.

Writing

I love writing. Writing is an infinitely variable way of expressing myself and connecting with the reader. It is both a skill and an art. I have worked with people of all ages on their writing.

Very knowledgeable and patient

My son and I met with Chris to assess and evaluate his reading skills. I found him to be friendly, able to actively engage my son and was thoughtful about his skills. He was thorough in determining where his deficits were and with his plans to help him. He is always on time and I look forward to working with him.
