Bio

My strength as a tutor, aside from the fact that I love teaching, is that I am good at explaining concepts so that they are clearly understood. I have a knack for breaking challenges into manageable components, so that even the most reticent student can feel a sense of progress. This has enabled my students to realize success, and I take pride in their accomplishments. I am proud to say that several of my students have gone on to become teachers themselves.

This has enabled my students to realize success, and I take pride in their accomplishments. I am proud to say that several of my students have gone on to become teachers themselves.

My undergraduate studies were in art and music, and I have taught both music and art to all ages, including adults. I have studied piano, music theory, and composition extensively both during and after my undergraduate work. My paintings have won some local awards over the years, and I have worked as a professional designer in the past. I have always been aware of a strong connection between art, music, and learning in general.

My doctorate degree is in law. In law school, I excelled at writing, especially research-based writing, and served as Articles Editor for the Pace Law Review. I co-authored a book on Energy Law with a former United States Congressman, and have published other articles as well. Most recently, I have written a number of musical plays for children that are performed at local schools, and have contributed to and helped edit an art education teaching guide that is soon to be published.

I enjoy teaching, and have made it my life's work to help students feel confident in what they are learning. I am currently teaching classes in both art and music, and would like to offer my services in these areas, as well as students that are struggling with writing. I feel that clear and effective writing and speaking is key to success in almost everything, and I am happy to help.

I have an undergraduate degree in fine arts (B.F.A.) from the College of New Rochelle. I also studied textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC and figure drawing, portraits, and watercolor at the Rockland Center for the Arts. For the past ten years, I have been teaching three art classes per week. These classes encompass drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and collage. I show my work locally, and my most recent award was from Pen and Brush in NYC.

I believe that I am qualified to teach study skills because of all of the intense exams that I have had to undergo, and prepare for, in the past. In law school, the grade in each class is based upon just one final test at the end of the semester in each subject. Therefore, successful study skills were crucial, as there was only one "shot" to make or break your grade. In helping my current and past students in reading, writing, music, and art, I utilize what I have discovered from my personal test-taking experiences. I have found that the key to success in any subject is to break learning down into smaller, manageable tasks. Depending upon the subject and the student, this can involve a variety of things. For example, for tactile learners, making and using their own flashcards or learning games usually helps. Students that learn by writing and organizing will benefit from making an outline. Learning how to create an outline, read for understanding, and analyze what has been read, are key to learning virtually any subject. Working with students on a one-to-one basis helps me to assess their strengths and weaknesses so that I can help them to be efficient learners. Mastery is always the goal, so that students can experience confidence in whatever subject they are attempting to learn.

My training involved over sixteen years of study, college classes, and master classes with a concert pianist. I have been classically trained, but also play and have taught jazz, improvisation, and pop. I have been taught by masters of proper technique, which I instill in my students, and am fluent in music theory. I am a member and the local chairperson of the National Guild of Piano Teachers, and my students participate in their National Piano Playing Auditions each year. I am also a member of the Music Teachers National Association and the New York State Music Teachers Association.
