Bio

I am a New York City ENL (English as a New Language) teacher, certified as an elementary teacher for 15 years, and as an ENL teacher since last year. Prior to becoming a full-time teacher in New York, I taught English conversation to students of all ages in Tokyo, and have since tutored students here in New York. I have casually studied Japanese over the years, and feel I have a good understanding of the linguistic and cultural differences that create challenges for learning English.

I consider myself a continual learner, as well as a teacher, and enjoy keeping up with education's changing landscape. I believe in student-cerntered learning, and believe in a curriculum that matches the student. If you are an adult who is designing a new line of jewelry, let's study articles about the industry, marketing strategies, and language to describe your brand. On the other hand, if you have a child in public school, working to meet the New York State Common Core Standards, I can provide focused practice and patient guidance based on the materials being used in schools. Whatever the level of the student or area of study, I love making learning fun and interesting for the student.

I became a New York City teacher by joining the NYC Teaching Fellows program in 2011 and obtaining a Masters Degree in Elementary Education. I have worked with students in grades 3 and 6 on reading, writing, and mathematics skills. I obtained a second Masters of Science in TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages) from Queens College, leading me to work with students in different grade levels who are learning English as a new language, and helping other teachers at my school to develop their skills in doing so. I have tutored students ranging from elementary-school aged children to adult in developing their writing skills. I have tutored students from Japan, and feel comfortable using some Japanese to explain ideas.

I have had many rewarding experiences working with students that had various goals for learning, and look forward to many more. I have recently been learning Japanese using Skype, and look forward to the opportunity to use technology to teach across great distances, as well as tutoring in more traditional settings. Let me know your goals for learning and I am confident we can make a learning plan that best suits you.
