About Stephanie

I have been a kindergarten teacher at a Montessori School for five years. For the past four years I have moved into a multi-age classroom teaching grades first through third. By using a multi-sensory approach to learning I have created and implemented lessons that teach the fundamental skills necessary for literacy, math, character building and an interest in learning. Through utilizing hands on learning, balanced literacy and assessments I have been able to reach the diverse learning levels and styles in my classroom and help the students in meeting the age appropriate learning standards set forth for them. I have experience in conducting benchmark assessments, writing IEP goals and creating behavior and learning plans for at risk students and students with special needs. Over these past nine years, I have also had the pleasure of co-teaching, being mentored and mentoring others.

In addition to teaching, I am also a Literacy Specialist at Hofstra University’s Reading and Writing Clinic. I have received a Masters Degree in Literacy Studies from Hofstra University and use my degree to help struggling readers and writers revalue themselves as learners and advance in their skills. I work with students of all ages at the reading and writing clinic in both small groups and on an individual basis. Additionally, my degree in Literacy has enabled me to formulate family literacy activities in my school as well as present about topics of interest and classroom experiences at national conferences. I am trained in the Orton Gillingham method of literacy learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently an elementary classroom teacher with nine years of experience. I understand the needs of this student population and teach many subjects on a daily basis.

Handwriting

I use the Handwriting Without Tears program. It is a multi-sensory approach to handwriting instruction.

Phonics

I am an Orton Gillingham trained teacher. This is a multi-sensory language program that specializes in teaching reading mainly through phonics and sight words.
