About Benjamin

I've always considered helping students excel in their studies to be incredibly rewarding. Currently, I am a PhD student in Stony Brook University's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, having attained my Bachelor's in Biology at Georgia Tech and my Master's in Marine Biology at UNC Wilmington. During this time, I have acquired extensive experience as a teaching assistant in the biological sciences, namely in cell and molecular biology, marine biology, and biological oceanography. Writing at a professional level has also granted me exceptional writing skills that I am eager to impart on students looking to develop their own.

I believe my teaching history/tutoring skills are best for those currently in high school or college, though you are welcome to contact me regardless. Generally, I am available on weekday evenings after 7pm and my hours are much more flexible on the weekends (9am to 9pm), though as a graduate student my availability can change. However, I guarantee responding to you within 24 hours should you request my services.

My fee is $40 an hour for in person lessons (ideally meeting in public spaces such as a Starbucks) within a 20 mile radius of Port Jefferson, NY. I can also do online sessions (perhaps via Skype) for $25 an hour, though in person is preferable.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you succeed!

I have 3 years' experience teaching a lab for biology majors entitled "Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology" without assistance. Concepts covered in this lab included photosynthesis, respiration, genetics, osmosis, microscopy, and biological molecules. I have designed my own presentations and exams and encouraged students to meet with me after class if they were having trouble with their assignments and core concepts. At Stony Brook, I continued refining my teaching techniques by TAing upper-level biological courses.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

I have taught labs with a focus on the introduction of cellular and molecular biology for undergraduate biology majors. Labs have focused on mitosis and meiosis, phenotype and genotype and subsequent patterns of inheritance (i.e., Punnett Squares), and an introduction to PCR and gel electrophoresis.
