My Teaching Philosophy
Most students have been taught to memorize formulas or procedures in order to find an answer to a math problem. But as students get older and the math curriculum becomes more challenging, many students are confused when they see problems they don't immediately recognize. That's because they haven't been taught how to analyze a problem and then think their way through to the answer. Although the “how” of a process is important, the “why” is even more important. Students who only learn how to do the process usually must relearn it year after year.
Using the right approach, students can be introduced to a different way of thinking about math. By learning how to think about a strategy instead of memorizing a process, students will be able to analyze and solve problems that are new or in a different form than those they are used to. This is the key to success in math. I am NY State certified to teach mathematics. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
