About Nicole

As a graduate of Curry College, I have student teaching experience on the fourth grade and fifth grade levels in a self-contained classroom, in both suburban and urban school districts.

I graduated from Fordham University with a Masters of Science in Childhood Education and Special Education. I also have two professional New York State certifications in Students with Disabilities 1-6 and Childhood Education 1-6.

I have been teaching at the same school for nine years. The school is part of District 75, the New York City Department of Education’s special education district. I have worked with different age level students from K-8 with different disabilities (Emotionally Disturbed, Intellectual Disabilities, Autism and Multiple Disabilities). All of the classes at the school are self-contained. I have obtained a certification in Life Space Crisis Intervention. I have held different out-of-classroom positions such as Math Enrichment Specialist trained in Singapore Math (Math in Focus), Data Specialist, Testing Coordinator, Technology Specialist and Curriculum Specialist. I am a key member of the Instructional Cabinet and a lead teacher for the Early Childhood team. I created and implemented the Early Childhood Literacy curriculum.

I have an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership from Stony Brook University. My School Building Leader New York State Certification is currently pending. I have completed a yearlong internship with the principal and four assistant principals. I have led meetings for my administrators and conducted several professional developments for the staff at the school where I work.

I am a highly enthusiastic, devoted and creative individual. I am extremely qualified for teaching special education. I have experience in and out of special education classrooms. Throughout my career, I have worked with a range of disabilities. I am tutoring to help me continue to grow as an educator in a different manner. I have been tutoring students for several years. Tutoring offers a 1:1 experience and allows the student to grow at his/her own rate. All of my students have increased their reading level within 2-3 months, increased their writing skills within 3-4 months and their math skills have increased within 4 tutoring sessions. I keep track of all student's progress to show the parent and the student how they are progressing. I create different visual representations of data to help track and understand the progress.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught students with ADD/ADHD in kindergarten through eighth grade for nine years. These students were from the New York City area and had other learning differences as well as emotional disorders. I have specific strategies to keep students focused and engaged (frequent breaks, hands on activities, cueing systems both physical and verbal, etc).

Autism

I have worked with students with autism for the past nine years in the NYC Special Education District, District 75. I am familiar with the TEACCH method with students with autism. I'm also experienced with using ABA instruction. Students with autism need 1:1 instruction and/or small group instruction. I am familiar and have used PECs with students with special needs.

Common Core

I have been working with the Common Core Standards since they were piloting in certain schools in NYC since 2010. I have given several workshops on teaching the Common Core Standards to staff and parents/guardians. I have differentiated curriculum in ELA and Math to meet the new standards. I also have differentiated curriculum for students with special needs. I have extensively worked with the Engage Common Core Curriculum for ELA and Math for grades K through 6th grade.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been teaching for nine years. My school is part of District 75. I created and implemented the Early Childhood Literacy curriculum.

Grammar

I have created curriculum the uses the Workshop Model and the Writing Process which always includes grammar and editing.

Handwriting

I have over ten years experience teaching handwriting using two different programs. I am trained in Preventing Academic Failure (reading, handwriting letters and numbers, writing and spelling) and Handwriting Without Tears (writing, spelling, and handwriting both numbers and letters). Both programs I incorporate a multi-sensory approach and the use of art and creativity. I also incorporate "Sky Writing" in all sessions. This allows for bodily kinesthetic learners to master the material.

ISEE

I have been working with several students in preparing for the ISEE exam. All students were accepted into their private school of choice. I have been tutoring ISEE for a few years. Preparation included, vocabulary development using an iPad, flashcards; math skills using an iPad, flashcards and white boards; reading fluency and reading strategies and test taking strategies. All learning sessions meet the child's learning style.

Phonics

I have experience with Orton Gillingham, Fountas and Pinnell, a DRA reading specialist and trained using Preventing Academic Failure. I have also used Words Their Way to teach word families.

Reading

I have adapted the Common Core Curriculum for students with special needs and differentiated the instruction with different tools and strategies. I have also taught students with special needs using balanced literacy and the writing process.

I have obtained a certification in Life Space Crisis Intervention. I have worked with students with disabilities for 13 years in inner city and suburb districts.

I have also adapted the Common Core Curriculum for students with special needs and differentiated the instruction with different tools and strategies. I have also taught students with special needs using balanced literacy and the writing process.

I have worked with teachers on creating IEPs for students with special needs. I have worked with related service providers to incorporate goals and modifications in IEPs.

Spelling

I have over 10 years of teaching spelling/phonics to students from pre-kindergarten to middle school using Preventing Academic Failure, Fundations, Words Their Way and Handwriting Without Tears. I also incorporate different spelling lists in weekly instruction (trick words, Dolch, etc.). I also incorporate using the iPad for spelling in all instruction. I always use a multi-sensory approach during my lessons.
