Who am I? I truly enjoy helping students become more comfortable with their writing. One on one tutoring is probably the best way to become more efficient and comfortable while learning any skill. An hour with a tennis or batting coach is bound to help your ability in tennis or baseball. The same is true with an academic skill. Immediate feedback and support is desirable and necessary when someone is developing their ability with words. Writing is difficult, but there are ways one can learn to be at ease with any writing assignment. The basics of good writing are a skill set anyone can learn. I want to help you master these skills so that you can spend more time on your education than on the drudgery of your assignments. Thank you for letting me help.
My undergraduate degree is in Modern Languages and Literatures from Notre Dame with Russian as my primary language. Graduate School study has been at Oregon and Johns Hopkins, SAIS for International Relations, and Utah State for Geography.
I am originally from New Jersey where I taught SAT Prep for about twenty years as both a private tutor and as an independent contractor for long-established Quality Tutoring Service. As a high school teacher I usually taught history, English, and science. I hold four teacher certifications and a middle school math endorsement as well. I also was employed as an adjunct instructor at three New Jersey colleges and taught college writing, sociology, political science, geography, and history. Student evaluations are available for your review if you would like to see what my students have felt about me.
While in New Jersey I worked on improving the English language skills of individual Korean professionals employed by the many Korean firms located along the Route 17 corridor. I was also actively tutoring in the Ft. Lee area Japanese community as well. Oftentimes I might work with a male professional one on one during the week and then with the family over the weekend. Additionally I was volunteering at migrant worker camps in northwestern New Jersey's agricultural region. My overseas English language teaching experience has been in Germany and in Vietnam.
I moved here in late 2009 and have taught SAT Prep and Lib 101: Library Research Skills several times at the local community college. Student evaluations are available from these for your review.
My photo is from August. I teach tennis so there I am on a hot summer day on the courts.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught both high school and college writing for more than twenty years. Writing ability is a skill that can be strengthened with proper training, and I have been very successful in this. Part of what you will gain with me is improvement in your organization skills. These are the foundation skills of many kinds of good writing in the school and test settings.
