I am a certified NYS High School physics teacher. I have my BS and MS in engineering and spent 33+ years at IBM prior to obtaining my certification. Many physics teachers have their background in biology and chemistry. In my case, I am truly dedicated to physics and going beyond teaching the specifics of physics. I have a depth of knowledge in physics which will give the student more of an appreciation of the topic. This will also help in better grasping what is really going on.
In my years at IBM, I worked as an engineer, and as a result can convey to the students real life situations so that they can better relate to what is being taught. I also look to motivate my students to following a science and math track so that they can be better prepared to meet real world challenges, and position themselves for gainful employment down the road. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have my bachelors degree in electrical engineering and my masters in energy management (aka, alternative energy systems). Included in this is 3 years of college physics and 3 years of math/calculus.
Subsequent to getting my degree, I worked for 33 years at IBM as an engineer, so I have real world experience in the topic area.
Finally, after retiring from IBM, I leveraged my educational background by becoming certified to teach physics in NY State. I took 24 credits in education courses to learn how to teach, so between my technical background and my training in teaching techniques, I am uniquely qualified to teach physics.
