About Lester

I am a machine learning engineer and educational advisor to students and professionals who would like to strengthen their quantitative skills for exams and careers. I focus on building strong foundations so students understand the principles of a subject. My approach also helps students grasp complex topics without excessive memorization. I graduated from Harvard College in 2011 - AB in Physics with Secondary Field in Mathematics - and from Columbia University in 2014 - MS in Actuarial Science. I worked at Harvard as a teaching assistant for calculus and physics courses and at high-end tutoring and test-prep companies. I also taught math and physics at MIT through the educational studies program for middle and high school students.

For high school students, I provide elite college admissions counseling. I help my students stand out from the other applicants by highlighting their passions on top of their scholastic accomplishments. I bring out my students' unique voices through their essays and overall admissions packages in order for them to get the attraction they deserve and be on their paths to success.

For working professionals, I provide technical training and guidance to advance their careers. My specialties include machine learning, data science, and computer science. I am also a trained actuary and have helped actuaries prepare for their preliminary SOA exams (e.g. Probability, Financial Mathematics, Models for Financial Economics, Models for Life Contingencies, Construction and Evaluation of Actuarial Models).

Currently, I am accepting new students in person and through video conferencing. Please reach out to me if you think I would be best able to help you with academic or professional goals, and I will respond to you as soon as I can.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Actuarial Science

I completed all five preliminary Society of Actuaries exams (P, FM, MFE, MLC, C) in my first sitting. I have my MS in Actuarial Science from Columbia University. I have also tutored actuarial students preparing for the exams.

College Counseling

I counseled many high school students on how to identify and apply to the colleges that match their preferences and needs. I have advised students on how to select their reach, target, and safety schools, and how to submit strong applications for each. I also provide guidance on essay writing to help students stand out from the other applicants (essential for elite college admissions). Also, I used these strategies myself to get into Harvard College (and later Columbia University for grad school) and taught them to my younger brother who also got into Harvard.

Computer Programming

In addition to studying computer science at Harvard, I have used Python extensively at a technology startup to automate many processes involving enormous amounts of data. I am also familiar with many of Python's scientific libraries like Pandas to analyze and visualize datasets, especially for data mining and machine learning applications. For managing data, I like to use and teach SQL (via MySQL, PostgreSQL) and MongoDB.

Computer Science

I have developed software in academic, research, and business contexts. I am familiar with fundamental computer science concepts including time complexity, algorithms, data structures, discrete mathematics, and topics from continuous mathematics as they apply to solving computer science problems. I enjoy combining theoretical and practical approaches to helping students understand what they need. My goal is to help them achieve their specific goals whether they want to succeed in their courses or advance in their careers.

Differential Equations

Not only have I studied and used differential equations for my math and physics courses at Harvard, I also used them for my research in magnetohydrodynamics to find the origins of planetary magnetic fields. This was used for NASA's Juno mission to model Jupiter's magnetic fields to help determine its physical composition.

Discrete Math

I have been teaching algebra and geometry to elementary school students, all the way up to graduate students for advanced mathematical coursework. I particularly enjoy covering applications of discrete mathematics to probability theory and computer science. I also enjoy working with discrete geometry and linear algebra which have applications to game design and computer graphics.

Fitness

I am a Certified Personal Trainer under the American Council on Exercise (ACE). I have been training and studying exercise, nutrition, and anatomy for over a decade and have helped many people improve their health through movement, diet, supplementation, and stress management. Previously, I worked as a personal trainer at Equinox. Now, I work independently with clients to help them become the strongest versions of themselves through fat loss, muscle gain, and corrective movements.

Guitar

I have been studying and playing the guitar since 2002. I have performed in many rock bands but also in jazz ensembles. I am also classically trained and can help with guitar composition and songwriting. I am proficient in many modern guitar techniques including alternate picking, sweeping, tapping, fingerpicking, and more.

Korean

My first language was Korean. I learned to speak, read, and write in Korean early on, and I still do when I communicate with my family members. I help English-speaking students learn Korean as well as help Korean ESL students.

Linear Algebra

I studied physics and math at Harvard where I studied and used linear algebra extensively, especially in quantum mechanics. I am also familiar with using linear algebra in R, MATLAB, and Python Pandas to manipulate data. I have done research for NASA involving linear transformations to model Jupiter's magnetic fields.

Physics

I received my AB in Physics from Harvard College. During my time there, I led laboratory sections for undergraduates as a teaching assistant. I have also taught physics courses for Harvard and MIT ESP (Educational Studies Program) for middle and high school students. I tutored physics and standardized test prep for elite tutoring companies in Boston.

Theatre

I have trained extensively in improvisational theater and sketch writing at The Upright Citizens Brigade, The Annoyance, and The Magnet. I studied the Stanislavsky method at HB Studio. I have been in many theater troupes in the past and still work regularly in live theater and film. I have also worked on production and stage management, as well as coordinating and casting.
