About Emma

Bio

If I had to summarize myself in one sentence, I would say that I am passionate in helping minds grow. My name is Emma, and I'm a recent graduate of Goucher College in Maryland, where I earned my Bachelor's degree. My fields of study are English literature, creative writing, and art history. One other thing I might say about myself is that I am a natural-born "digger." I love research. When I'm sorting through stacks of books, I'm in my element. Whether I'm analyzing Tolstoy, researching for a story I'm writing, or looking for proof about a theory I have involving a particular piece of art, I love the detective work that goes into discovery. But more than that, I love helping others see how being a scholar can be interesting again.

For the past six years, I've worked as an Apprentice at Writers & Books for their SummerWrite program. For those of you who are strangers to Writers & Books, we're a great nonprofit literary center in Rochester, where we offer camps and classes based on reading, writing, and theater for people of all ages. Part teacher, part writing mentor, part one-on-one tutor--Apprentices sort of do it all. I like to think of myself as a seasoned veteran in getting children's stubborn ideas onto paper, getting kids to think critically about the books and media they are consuming, and generally encouraging scholarly skills.

I live and breathe books. At Goucher College, I was privileged with the opportunity to create a major/minor combination where I studied many different facets of English academia. As an English major with a concentration in creative writing, I completed a thorough study of the canon of English literature while at the same time focusing on concepts of craft.
