About Stephanie

I love explaining through conceptual understanding and problem solving strategies rather than only teaching methods that apply to one kind of problem. That way my students do better in all their courses and not only the one that I tutor. Ideally my students learn good study skills and don't need me anymore after a few months.

I have 10 years experience teaching college chemistry and doing research and organic synthesis. I am an adjunct professor in chemistry and work at a college tutoring center tutoring general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics, microbiology, genetics, and botany. I started tutoring high school math, biology, regents and AP chemistry, and test preparation professionally over 1.5 years ago. I got that job by scoring a 35/36 on the math portion of the ACT after only one weekend of study after years out of the workplace to raise my children. A conceptual understanding of math lasts for life. I share my understanding with my students. I can teach tricks for fast ways to do the easy problems so that you will have time to tackle the harder ones.

For ACT science, general science knowledge is helpful, but important is strategy. Read the questions first, find the answers by looking at diagrams and in tables. Look for key words in the reading rather than trying for complete understanding of the content.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have used algebra extensively in my career as a chemist. I tutor algebra 1 currently in my part time tutoring job. I am good at coming up with a lot of ways to tackle a problem based on a conceptual understanding of algebra.

Algebra 2

I got high grades in high school and university math classes. With a BSc in Biochemistry and a PhD in chemistry, I have extensive training and experience in math. For my present math tutoring job I took the math portion of the ACT and scored a 35/36. In addition I am substitute teaching in the Webster school system at middle and high school level. I keep up with changes to the common core math curriculum with regular teaching training and perusal of the NYSED website.

Chemistry

I teach and tutor general college chemistry and organic chemistry as an adjunct professor and as a professional tutor in a college tutoring center. I and been tutoring regents and AP high school chemistry for 1.5 years. I have a PhD in chemistry and 10 years experience in research, teaching and organic synthesis. Many students have told me that my tutoring got them through their course. I will give you the confidence to tackle problems on your own. I look forward to meeting you.

Organic Chemistry

I have a PhD in chemistry and 10 years experience in research and teaching. I am working again after time spent raising my children. Currently, I am an adjunct professor and tutor at three colleges teaching organic and general chemistry and science. This summer I taught organic chemistry during the month of June. I work hard to make chemistry more accessible. I use models extensively. I strive to help you work through a question instead of just giving you the answer. My goal is to teach you how to ultimately do it on your own.

Prealgebra

I have a strong conceptual understanding of math and can explain it in terms of number lines and prime factors such my students can come up with ways to solve problems on their own. I grew up with math at the dinner table with two math educators as parents. In my career as a chemist I used math regularly.

SAT Math

I scored in the 99 percentile when I took the test. I have been tutoring and training to tutor for the test for the past year. I scored well in math classes through university and college where I obtained a BSc in Biochemistry and a PhD in chemistry. I have created a page of important math facts to memorize for the test.

Great Chemistry tutor

Stephanie is a great chemistry tutor. She has a great deal of knowledge and understands which topics are most important. She is friendly and is a good communicator, making some difficult areas of chemistry more easy to understand. I would highly recommend Stephanie for tutoring in chemistry.
