About Rochelle

Salvete! Ciao a tutti! Hello!

I am Rochelle, a seasoned veteran in the classroom, but more poignantly a life-long learner absolutely passionate about the confluence between language, history and culture. I have 10 years of experience teaching all levels of Latin, and nothing gives me greater joy than to celebrate vicariously the milestones and achievements of my students.

In Latin there exists a proverb: "Carta non dat panem"--"Paper does not yield bread", in other words it is necessary to secure nourishment for the body in addition to accumulation of degrees, certificates, accolades, books--I however, in my personal life prefer to invest in my own education rather than the transitory satisfaction of a sumptuous meal. I am a proud to renew my museum membership each year, and revel in the opportunities it affords me to travel, come into contact with people from around the world, teaching and learning in turn from each other.

I have spent the past two summers in northern Italy where I study standard Italian as well as the dialects of the Veneto Region. Language, in general, in both spoken and written form enchants me, and my experiences in Italy have served also to reinforce my unrequited love for my mother tongue, English.

While driving, I prefer listening to the "literary standard classics" of the past rather than any particular style of music. I derive great pleasure from internalizing and contextualizing thematic elements within my own scope of reference in day to day affairs, and assisting others in this process.

Insofar as my personal studies are concerned, I have decided to enroll in a Museum Studies Program in order to apply my skill set, translating and interpreting literature and artifacts from antiquity, in a new setting to reach a wider audience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

It is worth noting that both my bachelor's and master's degrees in this field of study--ancient languages, literature, history, and customs. I am thoroughly versed in Ancient Greek and Roman history in particular as well as the corpus of texts that accompany these extraordinary civilizations. I enjoy the histories of Herodotus and Titus Livy no less than the tragedies of Sophocles and Euripides or the Platonic dialogues.
