About Deirdre

My abilities as a tutor have been developed over a twenty-five year period in positions which included Special Education classroom teacher, district and city-wide staff developer, teacher-mentor, Special Education Supervisor, Assistant Principal and Instructional Support Specialist (21 schools/4 NYC boroughs).

The opportunity to rise from teacher to supervisor was facilitated and substantiated by data which provided evidence of my ability to achieve and sustain learning progress for both students and educational staff. Critical to this success was the ability to determine the methodologies necessary to identify and utilize individual learning strengths to meet learning targets not achieve in routine classroom instruction and close the learning gaps which widen yearly.

The proficiency in diagnosing and accommodating learning uniqueness was developed by pursuing and training in research based programs which addressed all kinds of minds and how best to maximize those skills effectively. Special interest in Attention Deficit issues and Dyslexia also inspired my to pursue and become certified in programs formatted around Ortin-Gillingham multi-sensory instructional strategies and subsequently made me uniquely qualified to be an adjunct professor of Education at Queens College, Educational Consultant to principals and administrators in NYC and as the NYS juvenile justice system and trainer for the Wilson Language Reading Program.

My goal now is to provide one-on-one interventions which will inspire confidence and efficacy for student learning

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I am uniquely qualified to address Common Core Frameworks across all curriculum areas in that I studied directly under Charlotte Danielson, who was instrumental in developing professional learning standards aligning to common core mandates for NYSED and NYCDOE. I subsequently used this knowledge providing professional develop and ongoing monitoring of instruction in facilities to insure competent use of the Common Core frameworks. As a tutor I have embedded this information into my practice insure that student practice aligns with curriculum mandates.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a teacher of all ages, and am a certified trainer in Orton-Gillingham based reading. I have certification as a teacher trainer in various Math programs currently being presented in NYC and an Special Educator and administrator. I have tutored all age groups in reading and math across all grade levels.

Handwriting

I am uniquely qualified to address handwriting issues in that I studied directly under Charlotte Danielson, and had training and was certified in the Handwriting Without Tears Program and have implemented their strategies with both special needs and mainstream students experiencing difficulties with graphomotor issues or confusion. I have been able to successfully rehabilitate writing issues and develop fluency with the writing process. I was also able to identify students whose issues were so severe as to require keyboarding training and assistive technology.

Phonics

I am uniquely qualified to address Phonics and decoding issues in that after five years of study, implementation and monitoring I was certified to be a teacher trainer in the Wilson Language System, an Orton-Gillingham based program using multisensory strategies to address phonics and decoding issues directly impacting reading proficiency. In addition, I was trained in the Lindamood-Bell Visualization/Verbalization program to facilitate reading comprehension. I have implemented these programs, not only with individual students, but with entire school district, successfully increasing overall reading performance on data-based testing both locally and in NYS testing instruments.

Special Needs

I am uniquely qualified to address Special Needs issues in that my entire career was formatted on dealing with that population. Not only my teaching audience include different handicapping conditions but my success with this population subsequently qualified my position as Special Education Supervisor, Director of Special Services for a school district and consultant to many schools in researched- based strategies and programs which I both personally and for large instructional groups achieved great success.

Study Skills

I am uniquely qualified to address study skills across all curriculum areas in that I was trained and certified in the All Kinds Of Minds program which inventoried learning strength and weakness areas in order to design studying strategies which leveraged student strength areas across all pertinent neuro-developmental domains. Students who were unsuccessful organizing and maintaining day to day performance were very positively responsive to the strategy across all grades and ages. In conjunction with this training, my years training and providing training as a Special Educator was instrumental in developing strategies to make students with these issues more successful in their overall studies.

Writing

I am the person who can teach you concrete organizational skills and targeted topic identification that you can apply to all writing mandates assigned. As a professor at Queens College and a writing teacher/tutor as part of the RTI (response to intervention) within the school district and institutional instruction, I think my services meet the criteria for offering you optimal assistance.
