About Brian

I am a professional writer with over forty books in publication with several major publishers. For years, I've mentored numerous young writers, helping them discover their own strengths and instructing them in the organizational and editorial skills that are crucial for SAT writing and college admissions essays. As an award winning novelist, I can also help guide creative writing students to the successful completion of their projects.

I hold a BA in English Literature from New York University. I also have a background in learning-to-read strategies, having worked as an editor on educational and instructional materials for Scholastic, an industry leader in the field. I apply these strategies to help students strengthen reading comprehension skills in order to improve SAT and ACT reading scores.

When it comes to tutoring, I believe each student has a different style of learning and deserves the thoughtful attention of a tutor who is willing to listen and adapt to his or her needs. Learning is a dialogue, one a tutor must engage in with patience, encouragement, and the ability to articulate its objectives.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Having worked as a professional editor and author, I can help students identify common errors found on the ACT.

ACT Reading

I help students breakdown and decode essays to improve their overall reading comprehension.

Literature

I have a BA in English Literature from NYU and a healthy knowledge of current curriculum titles. As a published novelist, I can help students identify ways in which a work builds and explores its themes. Understanding how the process works will lead to greater reading comprehension skills and reduced frustration when encountering new texts.

Reading

I have extensive experience in developing educational materials designed to help students become better readers. By implementing proven strategies, students can increase fluency and overall comprehension skills.

SAT Writing

As a professional published writer with editorial experience, I can help students identify common mistakes used in SAT questions. I also guide students in structuring essays to improve writing skills and achieve higher test scores.

Writing

With over 40 books in publication, I can help students develop their skills to become more successful writers. I instruct students on organizational and editorial techniques to improve the clarity and overall effectiveness of their writing.
