About Elsa

I am a tutor who is passionate about helping youngsters succeed and feel proud of themselves. When you feel confident about yourself, you do much better in everything -- getting along with friends, doing well in school and attaining your goals. I had one student tell me that I was just the right balance "of being firm, but also warm." I guess that's because I really enjoy working with students! I have a Master's Degree in Education and have taught in the classroom for seven years -- five in a high school and two at a junior college where I was in charge of a Federal Grant program to make sure every student received the help they needed to pass with flying colors. That's what I do as a tutor too: make sure you get the grades you want.

But then I stopped teaching when The New York Times tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to write for them. It was a lot of hard work, but I loved it. I wrote about politics, the environment, health issues and even real estate. Some of my scariest assignments involved tracking down mafia members and interviewing them. I had a reputation of being a very fair person, so even those tough guys liked me. Now I have come back to where I started out -- teaching, only this time as a tutor. I was recently teaching a high school boy with learning disabilities. Nobody thought he was smart because of his disability. But I could tell he was very smart, and he began to believe me. The happy ending of this story is that he has been accepted at three colleges, all with scholarships. When I work with you, I'll help you feel smart and confident too, and you will not only learn, but you'll have fun too. That's a promise!

My personality and background as a writing make me an ideal writing tutor. I love the ins and outs of the English language, and most of all, I love helping youngsters become proficient at writing. I love when I see the light shine in their eyes and a smile come across their face. It all started when I won an fire prevention essay contest in sixth grade and had to interview professionals in the field. I have never lost that love of writing -- of telling a story so that other people understand the subject at hand.

I have experience teaching for both the PSATs and the SATs. My motto with everything I do is to take it one step at a time. That way, nothing looms as an impossible task. I also know the little tricks of the trade when taking those tests, so that students can get the right answers faster. And when it comes to the essay portions of the test, I am a wiz who will teach you how to outline your thoughts first, stay on subject and write a winning conclusion.

As you have read above, I am a firm tutor but a very fair one. I won't ever overburden you or make the subject seem too complicated. When we tackle a subject together, we'll be working as a team. Learning can actually be fun, not just hard work. And my job will be to help you realize just how smart you are! That's a promise.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have an undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University, where I was always on the Dean's List. I also hold a Master's Degree in Education from Rutgers University and have years of teaching experience. I work well with traditional students as well as those with special needs. I taught writing and reading for seven years, and I was also was the director of a Federal grant program at a community college for students who needed extra help to succeed. In addition, I have written for The New York Times for many years, so I am a very accomplished non-fiction writer.
My teaching style is warm and gentle, but at the same time I am also firm. One student told me that I had the "perfect approach" to tutoring. Another high school student I worked with could not write a grammatically correct sentence. He has since been accepted at three colleges.

I was the director of a community college program for students, many with attention deficit disorders, who required a specialized curriculum to succeed. I designed the curriculum and hired the teachers.
I am patient with ADD/ADHD students and know precisely how much to push them and when to give them room to rest and consolidate their gains. I also know how important praise for their successes -- even the small steps -- can be.
