During this moment of crisis in our country, as we all scramble to adapt to education in different settings and formats, my experience as an online teacher/tutor has prepared me to support students and their families. Just in the 5+ years with Wyzant, I have tutored over 1,500 hours, most of those online. Throughout my career, in various contexts, I have been honing the art of teaching.

My students give me 5-star ratings and excellent reviews, describing me as "patient" "caring" and "explaining things clearly." These reviews paint an accurate picture of the type of teacher I purpose to be.
For the struggling students, my friendly, positive approach encourages them to believe that they can "crack the code" and succeed; I equip them with the tools to improve their skills, confidence, and grades through the use of materials which supplement the school curricula. It is also a joy to teach adult students who are motivated to learn a new skill, whether for professional use, such as medical Spanish, or for personal enrichment.

As a young child and through high school, I was introduced to the Spanish language by my mother, a teacher by profession. My first undergraduate degree was a B.A. in Spanish, and during my junior year abroad in Spain, I acquired near-native fluency. I have been able to maintain the fluency through my work as a teacher, tutor, freelance interpreter, assistant counselor for Latino families, and through many friendships with Spanish-speaking people.

Music has also always been an important part of my life. I began taking piano lessons at an early age, taught myself to play the guitar, and always sang, alone or in groups. As an adult, I returned to school to earn a second bachelor's degree and master's degree in Music. In addition to excellent training and performing experiences, the curricula included courses on teaching methods and techniques. My musical education prepared me to make concepts clear and to help people to develop latent talent, which has been my joy ever since.

Spanish

Spanish

Having tutored all levels of Spanish for many years, I am very familiar with the points of grammar that give students the most trouble. I help students to build their confidence in learning the language by tapping into their learning styles and by my personable and encouraging approach. It is also a joy to share my love of the language with other adults for their personal or professional needs. My bachelor's degree in Spanish Language and Literature included a year abroad in Madrid, Spain, where I developed near-native fluency that I have maintained throughout my life.

Sight Singing

I have a Bachelor of Music degree which included four semesters of sight-singing and ear training. I was trained in "fixed do" and I also use the numbers of the scale. As a choral director for the last 30 years, I have helped individuals and groups learn how to sight read new music through interval recognition, coupled with an understanding of where a particular note fits into the context of the chord.

The Absolute Best!

Elizabeth is tutoring my 2 older elementary children in Spanish listening, speaking, and reading skills. She is knowledgeable, fun, encouraging, and patient. I could not ask for a better teacher!

Very Knowledgeable

Elizabeth very patiently worked through pronouns and grammar during a challenging, but doable and effective 1 hour lesson. I got a lot out of this instructional time.

Wonderful!

I am an adult student looking to continue my process with spanish. Elizabeth was very natural and personable, helping with everyday chatting as well as the grammar that I struggled with. Looking forward to working with her again in the future! Thanks!

Engaging and thorough, with a personalized touch

Elizabeth does Spanish enrichment with both of my children (4th and 6th grade). She quickly got to know my kids and identified the areas she needed to work on with them. She is thorough and engaging. Her ability to tailor the lessons to what they love really impressed me. She quickly identified their areas of interest (golf, animals) and has incorporated them into the lessons. They look forward to their time with her. Thanks for making learning fun for them Elizabeth

Day 1 Lesson with Elizabeth

Elizabeth was prepared to teach me by looking into the type of work I do to help her understand what words I could study. She was able to teach at any level. I am a beginner and so she started from the beginning. It can be seen that she has a lot of experience, methods of teaching, and lessons.

Music Theory

Elizabeth did a fantastic job at teaching me the theory of music I decided what the heck to take an online music course at my community college. What I didn't realize how difficult it was going to be for me to learn it all by myself and music has always been a passionate thing and I didn’t want it to be a waste of a class if I didn't actually learn everything there is to know. But she was just amazing breaking down every part for me and making sure I understood everything before we continued on with such a bubbly personality without a doubt Elizabeth will be a part of this Music theory journey with me as I've already learned so much from just out first session.
