About Amie

I was an English major at a small liberal arts college located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. From there I started a career in magazine publishing, with job responsibilities that included writing, marketing and public relations. My work took me to 30 countries over a 10 year period. In that capacity I was fortunate to come into contact with people from many different cultures who spoke many different languages and was always impressed with just about everyone's knowledge of the English language. These experiences helped motivate me to try a different career path. I attended Boston University and earned a Master's of Education with a specialization in teaching ESL to adults. Upon my graduation I taught in the ESL departments of Boston University (Boston, MA), Concordia College (Bronxville, NY) and several private language institutes in Boston, Manhattan and Westchester (NY) county.

Over the course of my "teaching career" I have had the pleasure of teaching English (speaking/writing/grammar skills) to college students, but also conversational English to a United Nations Diplomat, as well as to a variety of professionals (scientists, doctors, business people) in Boston and New York who -- although proficient in the English language required for their jobs -- were unable to talk casually and informally with friends and neighbors outside of their jobs.

I have also enjoyed teaching English classes to lower-level professionals who often had few resources but were extremely hard-working and motivated to learn English. Although the bulk of my work has been with adults, I have experience teaching young children as well. I am a mother of young children and understand their learning styles and understand how to tap into their potential for success.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
