Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught all levels of ESL from literacy (pre-beginning) to advanced, to Business English to Pronunciation to Academic Skills to Writing and Grammar. I teach topics that range from making a doctor's appointment and getting directions, to apologizing, complaining, and using phrasal verbs and idioms. Students enjoy my classes for their fun and high energy.

Grammar

I've been teaching beginning through advanced intensive grammar utilizing a variety of tools from games to contextual exercises. I have been using these methods successfully for many years. My adult students always enjoy learning grammar in my classes because I use very creative methods.

Proofreading

Teaching academic English writing courses, I regularly edit student essays and research papers for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I usually have conferences with my adult students to point out where there is room for improvement and also to show areas where they have improved. Students always like these one-to-one conferences because the lessons learned are geared to their needs.

TOEFL

I am a native speaker of English who has been teaching TOEFL IBT and PBT courses at a local university and online for many years. I provide interactive and intensive practice using a range of materials and a variety of audio recordings to maximize student's highest possible scores.

Vocabulary

I am qualified to tutor in vocabulary because I understand that building a strong vocabulary is key to improving language skills. Having taught Reading and Vocabulary courses for many years, acquiring a strong vocabulary does not have to be difficult, especially when you have a knowledgeable tour guide like myself. Using reading, high interest exercises and games (of course!) to expand and tap into adult students' knowledge, the process will be simple, effective, and enjoyable.

Writing

With a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics, I have been a writing instructor for more than 25 years to adults, middle school, and high school students online and in person. Students enjoy my lessons for their fun and easy explanations of complicated topics. I provide intensive and interactive practice to refine writing and grammar skills. I guide students through the complete writing process starting at the sentence level.
