In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've been teaching English as a Second Language to adults for more than 20 years. I've taught levels ranging from literacy (pre-beginning) to advanced, to Business English to Pronunciation to Listening and Speaking (conversation). With each class, I've learned as much from my students as they have from me. I use a combination of structured and communicative approaches to teach. I teach topics that range from making a doctor's appointment, getting directions, and using the telephone, to apologizing, complaining, and interrupting politely. Students enjoy my classes, they say they have a lot of fun while learning. I like to use manipulatives (props)and role plays to bring the outside world into the classroom.
I've been teaching beginning through advanced intensive grammar utilizing a variety of tools from games to contextual exercises. I have been using these methods successfully for many years. My adult students always enjoy learning grammar in my classes because I use very creative methods.
Teaching academic English writing courses, I regularly edit student essays and research papers for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I usually have conferences with my adult students to point out where there is room for improvement and also to show areas where they have improved. Students always like these one-to-one conferences because the lessons learned are geared to their needs.
I have taught the TOEFL preparatory course to adults for many years. I have found it most helpful to use a skills based communicative approach. Key skills for exam success are taught that reflects current methodologies designed to maximize language acquisition. Interactive, meaningful topics give students an opportunity to engage in relevant and thought provoking discussions. The exam tips I provide ensure students attain the highest possible TOEFL score.
I am qualified to tutor in vocabulary because I understand that building a strong vocabulary is key to improving language skills. Having taught Reading and Vocabulary courses for many years, acquiring a strong vocabulary does not have to be difficult, especially when you have a knowledgeable tour guide like myself. Using reading, high interest exercises and games (of course!) to expand and tap into adult students' knowledge, the process will be simple, effective, and enjoyable.
As an ESOL instructor, writing is a natural part of every ESL course. I have taught academic writing for TOEFL and GED courses for a number of years. I provide in-depth grammar practice and editor checklists to refine writing skills on high stakes tests. I navigate adult students through the complete writing process starting at the sentence level and ending, if necessary, with the researched essay.
