I am a Certified Math Teacher that taught for over 25 years. I also have an Electrical Engineering Degree with a Master's in Computer Science. I have been tutoring and teaching very successfully for years. My personality allows me to relate very well with teenagers and get the most out of them. I love to teach/tutor math and fully understand why students do not comprehend mathematical concepts.
I have taught SAT classes for a long time as well and know the methods to achieving high scores on all three portions of the exam. I make sure that students understand why certain operations are performed and the theory behind them to help reinforce these concepts for future use. Math is the one subject that allows multiple methods and paths to obtain the correct answer and that needs to be encouraged. Patience is also needed to give students the confidence they need to attack problems that intimidate them. I used to own a Kumon Math Center which focuses on the basics to help students correct basic facts that they never absorbed in school. I have taken math courses ranging through Calculus I, II, and III along with differential equations while pursuing an electrical engineering degree. I am very patient and relate well to all types of teenagers, since I have so many of my own. I am a Certified Math Teacher that taught for over 25 years. Daniel was able to zero in on the problems my son was having right away. My son told me that Daniel's tutoring was "very helpful".
My daughter was having great difficulty in Algebra. After using Dan as her tutor, I can honestly say that Dan S. has helped her immensely and is a GREAT tutor. He is very patient, knowledgeable and personable. I would highly recommend him as a math tutor and plan on using him in the future as the need arises. Thank you Dan for all your help!!!
Daniel has tutored my daughter Samantha in trig for the last two weeks. Her knowledge and confidence has grown immensely thanks to Daniel. She loves his easy going manner and way of teaching the subject. The most important thing Samantha stated is that she can really feel Daniel's genuine concern for her to learn and get good results.
My daughter was in need of help with Integrated Algebra. There were a lot of things that were rushed through in school or never taught. So we didn’t know where to begin. Daniel has been able to zero in on specific areas and explain in a manner that she was able to understand. She now has a much better grasp on the subject and feeling more confident going into the regents.
My son was having problems in Trigonometry, but Daniel was able to see that the issue was an underlying weakness in certain aspects of algebra. By diagnosing the underlying issue Daniel got us working on what my son really needed, making the tutoring much more effective.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The ACT exam comprises some Algebra, Geometry and some trigonometry. As a teacher of all these subjects for many years, I can help students understand the concepts and methods needed to understand these topics. More importantly, I can help you find the right answers to these problems and help you achieve a much higher score on these exams. I've been doing this for a long time and can get you where you want to be.
Algebra is the most critical math subject to master as every math class further on is based on your proficiency within this subject. Like anything else, Algebra can actually be fun when you finally absorb the concepts. It is all in how it is presented and I've been doing this for a long time. I know exactly what a student is thinking when approaching a problem so it is easy for them to readjust their thinking about how to approach it. There are people who understand all types of math right away and there are some who can't see it at all. I can easily open the eyes of those who don't see it.
I have utilized all levels of Algebra within classwork but more importantly in my engineering background and can show how it all applies. Algebra 2 has several different topics within it but still has some basics that you must master before performing well in it. Many skills acquired in Algebra I are often the holdup from someone mastering Algebra 2. I can speak the language of the students in this area and really help them understand where they are not understanding a critical concept to move on. Algebra 2 can be a lot of fun once you understand the concepts. It can be a nightmare if you don't understand them and I fully know what it is that they're not understanding.
All elementary math stems from knowing the basics and building upon them. I can help children understand them by coming down to their level and speaking the language that they can understand. I have nine of my own children, so I understand how children think, comprehend and learn. Patience and alternative approaches are key to the development of a child's understanding of math concepts.
Geometry is an extremely important subject as you move forward into Trigonometry. Most students have trouble with Proofs but that is easily overcome once a couple of ideas are understood up front. I can speak the language of the student to help them understand the various aspects of Geometry and show them various methods of solving their problems. Geometry is more like a puzzle but much more fun when you know how to put the puzzle together.
Pre-Algebra is critical to understand because Algebra itself is so important. Even concepts like fractions are often misunderstood and those type of misunderstandings really hurt a student when moving forward. I relate to the 7th - 9th grade student very well and understand why they are not understanding certain concepts. If a tutor cannot recognize these attributes of this level, the student can have difficulty comprehending strategies on various problems both now and in the future.
Pre-Calculus is very important to master before moving on to Calculus. It is possible to skip this subject and go right into Calculus if you have mastered the earlier subject matter. Pre-Calculus is for the student who has not excelled in the prior math courses and I understand where it is that they need help. I can also relate these concepts for the student so that Calculus is easier as well when it comes up next year.
I have taught many Regents courses here in NY and fully understand all the various parts of a Regents Exam. Most of these tests are not based on 100 questions and are therefore graded on a sliding scale based on the number of correct answers. Questions to become more difficult as you progress through the exam.
The SAT exam is a unique exam that can be overcome by the proper strategies. Should I guess or when do I guess, should I attempt this particular problem, timing of the test, etc. are just some of the decisions that must be reinforced within the SAT exam. I usually bring students up over 100 points in scores for Reading and Math within several sessions.
When some Algebraic and geometric topics are delinquent, they must be reinforced before moving forward with the math portion of the exam. The reading component is comprised of several areas to be reinforced. Reading comprehension is a large part of the exam but there are other aspects of the Reading portion that must be mastered. Vocabulary is definitely important but there are strategies there as well. the SAT exam is a combination of knowledge and specific test taking skills needed to achieve a high score. This test is too important for your child's future, so you should make sure you get someone who has had great success before.
Trigonometry is a much different topic to study for a high school age student than Algebra or Geometry. There are many tools that must be utilized to understand a problem and the methods needed to approach it. Once these are established it is much easier for the student to grasp the higher level concepts associated with Trigonometry. Many times, other deficiencies such as Algebra come to light and those issues will need to be addressed as well. I recently took a student from getting 50s to 100s on exams in 4 sessions. It is easy to accomplish if you know what to look for.
